Automatic garage door

Does anyone know where I can get an automatic garage door thingy? What do I need to look for (I really have no clue) - we currently have an up-and-over door and I believe it's possible to just get a mechanism that we can fit to convert it into an automatic opening one (remote control I mean). But obviously I'm not totally sure. Is it something we can fit it ourselves? Any clues where I might get something like that? Would Obi be the right kind of place?

Reason I'm asking is because it's hubby's birthday weekend after next and he's always wanted one of these. He'll actually be away for a week before his birthday so it would be a pretty neat surprise if I could find one and get it put in (any volunteers like to help me with that?!) before he returns.

Thanks

Re: Automatic garage door

go to hornbach or bauhaus in germany... they have them, its easy to fit to an up and over door. Get someone to fit it as it does require some element of rigging and positioning. Depending on the model some connect to the door with a cord others with a link connected to a chain that runs on a beam, they obviously need to be connected to the mains electric system and bolted into the roof of the garage - ensure you have sufficient clearance between the car and garage roof!

Re: Automatic garage door

I run two Hörmann openers on the two doors on my garage. They've run perfectly for almost 7 years now, and they are used daily! There are dealer/installers for this company all around Switzerland.

Re: Automatic garage door

Garage doors can vary greatly in weight. We had several quotes before we had two units installed on both of our garages. The doors are about 20 years old and extremely heavy. A few companies tried to convince us we should buy new doors.

In the end we went for the Beninca and it was delivered and installed in a very professional manner. We needed an electrician and arranged this ourselves.

Here are the details:

Re: Automatic garage door

Anyone know any companies who can balance a garage door in or around west zurich?

I have an opened but can't use it as the door is badly out of balance and slams shut. Quite a heavy door.
