I am looking for a cheap bicycle just for the next couple months... I am currently studying abroad in Basel so I am on a limited budget.

Does anyone know where I can rent/buy a bicycle for cheap?

SBB rents out bikes, but not sure if cheap. But generally unless it is really crappy, you aren't going to get a cheap bicycle - it's just not the Swiss way.

You could try zweifache - they make bikes from recycled parts, so you may be able to get a cheap one (near the main station) - http://www.zweifach.ch/

If you really are only for a few months, you could try to negotiate a deal with them.

You can normally have your pick of bikes at the main stations.

You can borrow my bolt cutters if you need them.

Just remember to recycle it and put it back when you are don...

Cheap is relative.
Really cheap bikes tend to have cheap parts that break soon.
And repairs are expensive in Switzerland.
As you are in Basel, you might want to shop in Germany for a bike and ask for an "Ausfuhrbescheinigung".
The selection of "cheaper" bikes is larger in Germany.

How much exactly are you prepared to spend?
To what extent can you repair it on your own?

I am too interested in buying a basic bicycle. Is there any place nearby basel german border where we can get a good deal?

The thieves are not very Eco over here in Bern, when they finish using their stolen bikes, they just throw them in the river!

Doesn't hurt to try thrift stores/ Brockenhaus, if you're lucky you could find some hidden gems there.
