Public transport vs. car vs. both

Hi,

I am shortly going to be moving to Zurich - temporarily until the summer but then potentially for a further 3 years. I have a car in the UK. Public transport is so good in Switzerland that, at the moment, I am thinking about selling my car and just using public transport. But I currently think I will need a 4, 5 or 5+ zone ticket with the transport system and then if I want to explore Switzerland then I also need train tickets etc. I also need to somehow get my stuff to Switzerland.

So is it worth bringing my car? I need to keep costs as low as possible (ha!), but I am under 25 which, in the UK, means pricey car insurance and fuel is also expensive. The other side to it is that, if I go back to the UK, I will need a car. I'm currently thinking of selling mine as I don't see the point of paying for it not to be used. So I'm not sure what to do.

I would really appreciate some views on this.

Thanks

I use train for getting to work most days and getting round Zurich - and car for pretty much everything else.

Yes, you can take train and bus when you go skiing. But it is soooo much easier to throw all the gear in the back of the car rather than lugging it on trains and busses.

To off-set this i have planted some trees in my garden.

Ok thanks I'm not sure that I will go skiing but lugging all my stuff on the train to Zurich is not something I am looking forward to...

drive yourself and your stuff to Zurich.

have a rest.

drive your car back to the UK and sell it if it makes sense (it will at some point if you remain in Switzerland)

buy one of these from Toys R Us before coming:

It totally depends on where you work and how much time you need to get there on the Public transport.

If you are working in center of town then Public Transport is the best.
Also don't forget you need to pay for parking at work at most of the places.
My Employer charges 40 CHF for Internal employees and 150 CHF for external.

Also the apartment you have might or might not have parking included...but be ready to pay anything from 50 CHF to 200 CHF for parking space there.

Re: Public transport vs. car vs. both

Driving to Zurich is a good idea - although then I have the problem of getting stuff back if I can't stay?

Parking charges - thats a really good point. Generally, for work I can use public transport to get to where I need to be, but it would save time if I can drive and it would be handy if I have to move things.

I think I'm heading back towards the original idea of selling my car. It would be great to have it (and I like the idea), but I think its just going to cost too much

Thanks

p.s. not sure a pogo stick will get me to Switzerland...........at least in time to start work

Under 25 means you still qualify for some of the SBB promotions.
