Tanks

Now this is purely hypothetical, well sort of.
A few mates and me were having this discussion and could not agree on this.

Is it allowed to drive a tank on public roads ?
What kind of license would be needed ?

I know some public figures (Jay Leno, Jeremy Clarkson etc...) have owned tanks and driven on public roads.

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the law is.
Also, if you had the chance to get one...which one would you get ?
If I could, I would get this one...

Thanks much.

It has to the chieftain - 30 year service history - and the best tank in the world when it was introduced.

I guess you always have priority!!

Re: Tanks

You would need an HGV license, and isn't there a class "Steered by it's tracks" ? Over a certain width you would need a police escort.

Presumably the Swiss army have exemptions, as they can often be seen on the roads, traffic is organised by the military police.

In Germany the BAOR pay the local farmers thousands in compensation after running over their land.

You are not the only one who would like to ride a tank. If we all got our way then there would be tank jams in the morning :)

Re: Tanks

Tanks, as any tracked vehicle, are almost always trucked on low-boys for any distance. Not only do tracks wreck pavement in no time, pavement wears out the tracks quickly as well.

Tracks are enormously expensive to replace. A big advantage of tracks though, is you don't need winter tracks or AWD/4WD. :D

Really? All that cash and can't handle roads? They are useless for me then.

Hubby was in the tank division in the army. The armoured personnel thingys are okay for roads but they kept the tanks with the tracks off the roads because they damage the surfacing.

Or so I'm told.

Tanks are supreme for dealing with uppity 107s during the daily commute.

Re: Tanks

with a tank, the advantage is that you have no traffic problems:

don't park illegally in lithuania (also available on youtube):

Re: Tanks

It was where it all began. But modern tanks are simply scary! 1500BHP engines - reactive armour, counter measures - and smooth bore main guns.

Mental!

My office window is just opposite the entrance ramp to the military garage at Wankdorf. We often get a huge barrel almost through our window. Out of interest, which MBT do the Swiss Army use?

Edit: Wikipedia is your friend, they operate the Leopard 87
