Why did you need your Aussie license? Just realised my one expired mid November...

Am very curious...
Because I haven't got a Swiss licence.
I have no real intention of driving here so I didn't think about it.

I would imagine that if you have a Swiss licence now, then it doesn't matter at all.

Keep in mind that an Australian licence can be renewed (although expired) for 5 years after it has expired.

Renewing mine took approx 6 weeks and was a nightmare. They ask for all sorts of medical information etc.

If you don't hold a Swiss licence either, then you would obviously still need the valid Australian licence for the change over.

I've given up and realise that I'm not going home any time soon so perhaps I should get a Swiss one now.

I'm also going home in Feb next year for a visit, so I will need the Queensland 'library card' then

I don't have a Swiss licence.

I haven't indicated that I have.

Renewing an Australian licence first in order to be eligible to get the Swiss one has been my beef so far.

I will be applying for a Swiss licence in March next year....... can't rush these things.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

By the way, your Australian license doesn't have to be valid in order to change it to a Swiss one - since Swiss licenses don't have expiry dates they aren't particularly bothered whether or not you've paid your fees in Australia to keep the license up to date.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

My wife and I had both been driving for many many years in Victoria. For some reason her license renewal went through the Winterthur office while mine went through the Zuirch one.

I got my license immediately, she head to get a letter from the Road Traffic Authority to say when she had passed the driving test.

I got my Tasmanian licence changed earlier this year after it had been expired for about three months. When I inquired whether it needs to be 'active' in order to be changed over I was told that it can be expired by up to one year (at least in Zurich).

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

I got my swiss licence about a year ago. I had heard about these difficulties so I contacted vicroads and I ordered a report that stated when I had first applied for my licence. It cost about 10 dollars and was sent within 2 weeks to my swiss address. I had no issues getting my swiss licence. Perhaps contact your state road authority as they probably provide a similar report. It also details your traffic infringement history.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

We were kindly reminded by our Germinde today that we need to change our licenses asap. We went in for another reason.

I have a Brit one the OH has an Aussie one. Basically we were told it can be done in the local office for a slightly higher fee.

Just need and eye test and thats it.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Hello,
Probably a bit late now but I got my license in Canberra but have a QLD one and had heard that the Swiss authorities need proof of when I was first issued my license so I contacted the ACT Road Transport Authority via email and they were super helpful. Apparently I need to pay $20 and can scan and email 2 forms of ID and they will provide a transcript of my license history even the same day she said. Haven't done it yet but sounds good on paper!

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Just updating the thread.

I received my Swiss License yesterday, and the process wasn't so bad given that I've been here 3 years.

All I had to do was:
  • Get the eye test (20chf)
  • Passport photo
  • Fill out the application form
  • Hand in my license (both)
The trick came with the license. Earlier in the thread I spoke of the difficulties of updating an Australian licence but it seems to have been worth it.
It also seems that the Swiss do in fact care about an expired licence. You will still need to prove that you currently hold an effective license for the transfer, and I was also very fortunate I hadn't thrown my old one away.

I originally handed in my current valid license, however as the effective date on the license was 'after' I arrived, this prompted the question "When did you sit the practical exam?"

What you need to prove is that you held a current valid license 'before' you entered the country. They are not cool if you go home and get your Australian license after you move here and then expect the 'transfer'...... nope, you will have to sit the practical test here as well.

My options were:
  • Produce the expired license to show the prior date, or
  • Produce an official document when I passed the driving test.
Fortunately, I still had the expired license and could simply hand that in as well (yes, both licenses were required).

I have since learnt that Victorian licenses have the date of the practical test printed on them, so these are an exception. I'm not sure about the other states.

If you are reading this and are about to enter Switzerland, have a closer look at the expiry date on your current license. Keep in mind that Australian licenses remain valid for upto 5 years after the expiry date (as in, able to be renewed), but the expiry date may pose a problem here.
To be safe, it might be best (as Nic80 mentioned earlier) to just get a copy of your records from home and bring them with you.
(I have tried that from here and it's almost impossible - response time is upto 15 working days between each correspondence, and you know how painful it is to call).

Hopefully this post dispel's or clarifies some of the rumours surrounding the transfer of an Australian drivers license. Most importantly, you can change your license after you have been here for after 1 year, you just can't drive here after the first year, and you won't have to sit a test.

oh, and the turn around time to receive the new license after I handed in my expired license........... I received the Swiss license in the post the next day !!!
(you can't beat that for efficiency, so well done Switzerland).

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Can someone please tell me what's the latest process. I want to change my Indian license with Swiss.
Also is there any special clinic for eye test for license purpose or anything like visilab would do?

Many many thanks..

Wow have the rules changed.

When I did mine.

(i) Got eye test done in switzerland,
(ii) went to the Strassenverkehrsamt
(iii) filled in a form
(iv) handed my NSW license to them
(v)Was asked when I first drove or how long I had been driving I answered the appropriate answer which was to tell them the age I received my license
(vi) paid some small amount like 160CHF

1 week later Swiss license arrived with an honesty sticker on the NSW telling me it is not valid in CH

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Thanks Wallabies!
I also heard that one needs to pass practical control driving test to exchange Indian license with Swiss. But looking to get an idea of the complete process and documents required.

I am in India now and will be moving to Zurich in a week (not much time), so I could try to gather required document which I don't have.

Best to ask the authorities there is a risk that a P plater licenses may or may not be considered a proper lisence

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

From NSW ... ordered out license + recorded online with RTA and took it to the Strassenvksmt (abbr)... handed over aussie licenses and paperwork. 2 days later Swiss Drivers Licenses and Aussies drivers licenses returned with a sticker saying Not Valid in Switzerland

I understood you had 12 months to convert from a foreign license to a Swiss driving license ... otherwise you had to start the process again locally ... I would call/ go see the Strassenvksmt (abbr) or your gemeinde for the correct advice

Not entirely correct on the twelve months.
You can drive on an Aussie licence for up to twelve months, then have another period after that in which you can't drive but are able to convert the Aussie licence to a Swiss one. I think it's another twelve months, but best to check.

Hi All,

I went in today to transfer my Australian Driver's License to get a swiss one, and thought I had all the right documents, had done my eye test etc. But, they told me I needed proof of when I completed my first test.

I have been on the NSW RTA website, but can't think of exactly what this is. I completed my learner's just over 10 years ago, but have no idea when I got my full license.

I'm sure there are plenty of Aussies on here that have transfered their license, as well as people from NSW that have done it... Can anyone help me out, please?!
You're lucky they told you. I've been driving for 15 years and I got a provisional licence since the guy at the desk took my last renewal date (two years ago) as the date of my driving exam.
