Australian Driver's License Transfer

Hi All,

I went in today to transfer my Australian Driver's License to get a swiss one, and thought I had all the right documents, had done my eye test etc. But, they told me I needed proof of when I completed my first test.

I have been on the NSW RTA website, but can't think of exactly what this is. I completed my learner's just over 10 years ago, but have no idea when I got my full license.

I'm sure there are plenty of Aussies on here that have transfered their license, as well as people from NSW that have done it... Can anyone help me out, please?!

This is honestly the first time I have heard of this.

Dodgey Queensland licences do the eye test there and then at the cop shop, so the licence would be the same item of proof.

This clearly sounds like you are going to get Switerlanded have to go to your local doctor and have them confirm at an additional fee.

I don't drive here

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Converting my WA license required only the eye test and the paperwork that they provided. The also put a sticker on my WA license stating that it was no longer valid in Switzerland. It peeled off quite easily.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Yeah, in NSW it's the same. Give them (or simply tell them) your license number, they open a little cupboard that has the eye test board inside, then pay for 1, 3, or 5 years. They take a new photo, then 5 minutes later you're outa there, new license in hand!

I had done the eye test, filled out all the forms, went and had passport photos taken... Then when I got there, they asked for confirmation of the first time I had taken the test. I told the girl that we don't exactly have anything like that, because we don't need it, to which she replied, there must be something, because I have served other Australians that have had to do the same thing...

I do believe I am being Switzerlanded once again! You'd think this wouldn't happen as much with a Swiss wife! haha

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

I just had to get documentation evidencing when I was first licensed to drive (which was easy to remember because I got my first Driver's License on my birthday when I was old enough). Of course, I couldn't go back that far because the stupid state wouldn't respond to my inquiries.

Fortunately, the second state where I was licensed did (at the age of 22). So they sent a copy of my first driver's license application by email in .pdf format. All I had to do was provide them with the approximate date of when I applied. It helped that I was able to provide them my DL number from when I did have a DL there, too.

All Switzerland cares about is knowing the the furthest back you can prove you've been driving. Otherwise you have to go get a Blue L and put it on your and that just jacks up everything.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

You need to get a copy of your licence history from the Roads and Traffic Authority in Australia. We were told about this before we left Australia and so organised it in advance. It's as simple as going into the office and paying a fee for them to print it out and give it an authorisation stamp. This gives you the date you received your licence (as well as every infringement you have ever received and the number of points deducted).
Unfortunately I don't know how you take care of this when you're out of the country.

She must have meant "Austrians"

So far this thread reveals that Sandgropers, Cochroaches, and Cane Toads all don't require the eye test.
We can also deduce that anyone from the NT is also not likely to need to comply, which only leaves Canberra or Tassie

Canberra is full of corrupt pollies, and I can't see Tassie being overly proactive either.

Where is Australia do you have to do an eye test?
(It must be South Australia...... nobody likes Adelaide)

.......... were you still wearing "Leiderhosen" from the Oktoberfest?

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Yeah, I did the same thing. On my 16th birthday, was in that office getting my L's. Had no idea when I got my full license though.

I just found my Driving Record online, payed $20 & could view/print it off. Hopefully that'll do. Only problem is, it is 2 pages long due to the fines and suspension I received in my younger days... oops. Hopefully they don't see any of that...

You'll be fine as long as you don't let your insurance agent see it

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

My hubby had this problem but I did not. We have Qld licenses but the policy is the same. My hubby renewed his licence within 6 months of our arrival date, I did not. The problem is that there was nothing on the licence to suggest that he had a licence prior to the renewal. So he could not prove that he had in fact been driving on a full licence for more than a couple of months.
NSW might be a bit better than Qld on the customer service, but you need something official from the NSW RTA that says the date you first were issued a full drivers licence. (or do you have your previous drivers licence?)
We got a letter on govt letter head scanned and emailed and that was sufficient.

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

This is fairly common. When I first got my license, it said I'd been driving for about 4 years (because Illinois licenses are renewed every 4 years and they based it off the date of issuance). A quick email to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Wisconsin (where I got my license) resulted in a short letter on official letterhead that indicated when I first got my license (way way back in the last century ). They didn't even charge me for it, and it was quite sufficient for the Strassenverkehrsamt.

Good luck!

Haha that would be good customer service, but this is a government department in Australia... and I have read on EF about complaints with the local govt departments - they are well oiled machines in comparison.

Wow, I went through the same process changing over a Tassie licence in Zurich. Had it within less than a week. Even better, unlike the Australian ones, this one never expires... So can't exactly see the point of ever updating my Australian one again...

ahhh....... a little word of advice

I'm 'renewing' my Australian licence now.... it had just expired.

Living overseas and renewing your licence is a total nightmare.

Keep your Australian licence valid. It's much easier.
(two years I've been here and didn't think I'd need it, but I was wrong)

Why did you need your Aussie license? Just realised my one expired mid November...

Am very curious...

Re: Australian Driver's License Transfer

Wow have the rules changed.

When I did mine.

(i) Got eye test done in switzerland,
(ii) went to the Strassenverkehrsamt
(iii) filled in a form
(iv) handed my NSW license to them
(v)Was asked when I first drove or how long I had been driving I answered the appropriate answer which was to tell them the age I received my license
(vi) paid some small amount like 160CHF

1 week later Swiss license arrived with an honesty sticker on the NSW telling me it is not valid in CH
