EU driver licens invalid after 12 month?

How does this work if you are leaving the country after say for example 13 month? Are the police really strict on this or could you explain the situation to them?

Re: EU driver licens invalid after 12 month?

My gf changed her licence after 2 years (was only supposed to be here 18 months so didn't bother, but that was 3.5 years ago...)

When they asked why she waited 2 years said she had a car in the UK as well and needed to insure it, so she kept her UK licence until she sold the car... they seemed happy with that.

So basically don't worry about it.

If you are staying then change it before 12 months, otherwise shouldn't be a problem.

Don't drive in your 13th month and you won't have to worry about it. Otherwise, a cop having a bad day could mean a hefty fine or loss of license for you, I guess.

A fine, yes. But I doubt the have the power to take away your license. It's not issued in Switzerland. So no Swiss authority has the power to invalidate it.

That was poorly worded on my part. Not a revocation of the license, but they certainly have the power to ban you from driving within Switzerland (a common result of "severe" traffic violations), which is an invalidation, more or less.

Yes. Perhaps. But unless it was something very very serious this wouldn't happen just because the license wasn't changed over. It's an administrative offense only.

But you aren't suppose to drive with foreign plates after year either....so if caught it could be a hefty double fine...

Yes.. what if you take the car out of the country then and just drive it back and forth when moving out?

Do you have insurance on the car? Together with that and registration at the Gemeinde they can figure out if you drove the car around for more then a year here....

Re: EU driver licens invalid after 12 month?

If you really are leaving on the 13th month, ie. one month over the limit, then I wouldn't change it. But if you think there is any chance you will stay longer than in the 11th month I'd go get it all sorted.

After the 12th month the problem is not so much the license but the car. You won't be able to import it tax free and it will be a bigger hassle.

Anyway, it's not difficult so if in doubt, I'd go get it done.
