| | Zurich public transport without coins?
Possible?
It's great they managed to place a vending machine on every bus/tram stop. But they all coins-operated, aren't they? That proves tricky at times.
Now, I do normally buy monthly and multi-pack tickets. But occasionally I need to travel outside of my zone, e.g. Airport, and I don't know what my options are if I can't find any coins in the pocket.
I think I once saw somebody buying a ticket from a bus driver at the Airport but I'm not sure about that. Is that possible?
I don't remember now but I don't think all SBB machines at local train stations accept Credit cards. I think none accepts notes or I am wrong?
Any information appreciated |

You can buy tickets on all buses, and non-S_bahn trains.
Trams and S-bahn are "selbstkontrol", ie no tickets are sold onboard, so being onboard with no ticket -> 200chf fine
IIRC, most SBB station machines take notes and CCs.

If you have a smartphone download the SBB app and buy tickets online. I think there is a way of doing it for non-smartphones with MMS, but have never needed it (I know you can definitely buy the night network supplement via MMS).

In Zone 10 the driver doesn't sell tickets and you will be nailed for a fine if you ride without one. Trolleybuses don't sell tickets.
The ZVV is starting to roll out new touch screen machines that accept credit/debit cards though so things will improve. No notes still (thieves would be trashing the machines otherwise) although there are 20CHF changers at Bellevue and Central.

Any information appreciated | | | | | you can also buy tickets using your mobile phone, or pre-buy tickets at stations and also at most newsstands and kiosks.

It could well be that all stops in zone 10 do have a machine (though I wouldn't bet on it).
many of the little-used rural stops don't have machines so that's where drivers sell most tickets. By definition there aren't many rural stops in zone 10.

Anyway, she was showing him her phone and he appeared to be unhappy about something. In the end she stood her ground and stopped talking to him, and he got off at the next stop. Not sure what it was about exactly, but I was wondering, if you buy a ticket on your phone, do you have to prove you bought it before you begin your journey?
