Re: Expired UK driving license

If you have a UK address you can get it sent to you can get another UK one.

I just renewed mine a few weeks ago.

However you have to sign that you are resident in the UK , having been there for more than 6 months, so your liable to UK taxes on your world wide income.

Not a good idea IMHO, you clearly have not 'left' the UK as far as the UK revenue are concerned.

You really think the UK are that organised?

Basically 2 options, if you still have a UK address that you can use then you can renew your photo id using that address, otherwise you can easily change it for a French licence.

If you are staying in France then probably no reason not to get a French one, and it's just as easy to change back again if you return to the UK.

UK tax is self assessment, tax evasion is not covered by the statute of limitations.

It's just incredible how organised the HMRC become when theyre attempting to collect 17 years of back taxes.

See, they don't even know that they can only go back 6 years...

6 years is normal, however they can extend without limit if it's worth their while.

That's their rule. There is no statute of limitations.

I don't know the legal requirement for this in France, but I was fined in Brussels for driving on a UK licence when I had been resident in Belgium for more than three years.

Now licenses are EU just issued by a country, they should be valid. I assume your talking about the old paper UK one.

I'm sure you're right. You normally are, but I can't remember. I've been rattling around the world for too long. I just remember the fine, which still rankles

Thinking about this over a cup of tea I now think you're wrong because, when I moved from Belgium to Switzerland, and became resident in Switzerland, I was required to change my Belgian licence to a Swiss one.
I've just checked with old Swiss husband who says that I'm right.....which gives me satisfaction because I'm so rarely right

So there you are, I'm wrong as usual
Except that Switzerland is now so often lumped together with the rest of Europe (airports etc.) that muddled oldies like me sometimes forget fundamentals

But think of the loss of jobs in CH, if they just accepted EU driving licenses like anybody else.

After committing a driving offence, you may have to change to the local local EU one, so they can disqualify you from driving!

You are probably both right, it depends when you lived in Belgium.

It was only in about 1995/96 when you could keep your EU licence when living in another EU country so if you were in Belgium before that you should have converted it.

I can't remember the exact year but I know I had converted my French one to a German one just before the laws changed and was really cross as I'd had to pay to get an official translation too. If I'd waqited another month I needn't have bothered converting it.

I never got a Belgian one although we lived there for 13 years and only had to change my German one for a Swiss one when we moved here last year.

No problem unless you get stopped while driving a car...
