New member buying 2nd hand car privately

Hello all, new member here as I recently moved from the UK to CH

I'm trying to gather some information on how to proceed with buying a 2nd hand car here.
I live in canton Fribourg but have put a deposit on a car currently registered in Geneva as a private sale. I'm trying to figure out the process to get my own plates for the car, and from searching the net it seems to vary from canton to canton.

From what I gather, the car will need to be tested in FR even though it has some month left on the test done in GE. Is this right, or is the GE test valid for FR?

Second question, I moved 1st Sept and don't have my work permit yet although the employer is sorting that out. I've been told it can take anything between 3 weeks and 3 months, but is it necessary to have it to get a registration, or is my house contract sufficient?

And finally, in what order do I need to complete the steps to get it registered to me in FR. From what I gather it needs to be:
1. Current owner cancels his carte grise
2. I sort out my car insurance
3. I can get temp plates from FR to get it to do its MOT over there?
4. Once all of the above is done I can finally get my plates

Also will have to sort out tax, is that done by the place who also sorts out the plates (I think they're called OCN in FR)?

A lot of questions I know but seems very difficult to find the right info by googling.

Cheers,
Chris.

I think you will need a work permit.
Get insurance
Take cancelled car papers to local licensing office. Leave with plates.

At some point in the future you will be invited for a test, it might be a month or 2 years, it's not exact. I have been 5 years between car tests.

Yeah, no expert myself, but I think you need some form of legal residency for both insurance and registration. I would suggest going first to an local insurance agent, say AXA, and let him take you through the ropes.

I think inspection intervals are primarily a function of the age of the car.

That's my understanding too.

We moved to Basel in August and are currently in temporary accommodation. We bought a car, this week, from a garage near Zurich. As we are due to move to Kanton Aargau in mid October, we asked whether the car could just be registered there straight away to avoid double costs (of registering in Basel Stadt and then Aargau) but the garage told us you have to be registered in the canton before you can do this.

I've got an appartment sorted so legal residency is fine, its just the paperwork for the work permit I'm waiting on.

The car is a 2002 model so inspection is every 2 years, it was last done in April 2010 but in a different canton.

I'll speak to an insurance agent as you suggest, probably the best way to figure out what needs doing.

.
The canton does not matter. The test runs out when they invite you for a new inspection, time is theoretical you could wait several more years, or straight away as it's more than 1 year & an owner change. They make it up as they go along!

...a place to start in Fribourg. I only chose AXA because I have had only good experiences for quite a few years. YMMV
