Highway 'Vignette' for Austria

Hi,
I have to drive to Munich and plan to go through Austria. I heard I could buy the austrian highway 'vignette' from the petrol pumps 'near the border' . Could someone please tell me how near is this 'near'? I mean I dont want to start stopping at every petrol pump asking for it. So if some one could tell me the name of the place where I can stop and buy, it would be great.
Thanks much
shaf

+1 I'm going to just north of Munich tomorrow via Austria.

So any garage info on the A13 Swiss side nr Vaduz would be useful.

Re: Highway 'Vignette' for Austria

If you go round the corner you can get away with it - if you go through Austria you'll need one.

When we drove "through" we grabbed one in the first petrol station we saw - easy.

I did some research a while ago and it seems that there are now machines right at the entrance of the tunnel where you can get a one-way ticket just for the tunnel.

Anyone tried these out?

As DodgyKen confirms, if you exit Switzerland at the intersection by Hard, you can drive through Bregenz without using the Austrian freeway and then just follow the lakeside main road and join up with the German freeway once you've crossed the border.

I got one of these things a few weeks ago - I think it was roughly 6 euros and it was a corridor vignette or something like that (god, sorry my memory is so bad), but it was easy.

Re: Highway 'Vignette' for Austria

I drove through Bregenz in a weekend last year. It took AGES as everybody else did the same. If you return within 10 days, you may want to consider buying the vignette, and save the time.
It really makes you wonder, why the Austrian government does not make that short stretch of Motorway vignette free, instead of letting the citizen of Bregenz live in a constant traffic jam.

Doc.

So this tunnel ticket would be in addition to the vignette thing?

The "tunnel ticket" is the "Korridorvignette" which is not just valid for the tunnel but from the German border to the Hohenems exit.

You only need the regular vignette (for all of Austria) or the Korridorvignette but not both.

The different types of vignettes are explained here.

Once you are on the Austrian side of the border, you can get it from all the petrol stations. You can get one for the way back too at the same time. Saves time. Just tell them when you plan to go back.
