Registering car tomorrow

Hi All!

Thanks for all the help with the licence. All sorted and took 2 days.

I have bought a car and now need to register it. I have few questions and was just wondering if anyone had done it recently.

1) Is there a fee to register and get the licence plates?
2) Will they give me the licence plates straight away?
2) What do I have to take with me tomorrow? I have my licence, the vehicle registration documents from the previous owner, my B permit and insurance confirmation (which has also been sent through to the "traffic office" electronically. Is there anything else?

Cheers,

Matt

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Hi!

Here in Basel the fees are 30CHF for the documents and 40CHF for the licence plates. I got my licence plates right away.

I don't think you need anything else, the previous registration documents and the insurance confirmation are the important things...

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Hi Chris,

Thank you.

Apparently I don't need to even take the insurance documents as they have already been advised. However, I have printed it and will definitely take them with me.

Did you have to pay the fees upfront or will they send me a little orange slip? Which I was expecting for my licence but they didn't. Odd.

Cheers again

Matt

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Oh and it seems that you have to bring a "change of ownership" document that is signed by you and the previous owner:

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Hi!

I paid upfront. However, it was a new car so I did not have to bring this change of ownership document

Here in Baselland, the fee was CHF60- for the plates and CHF40- registration fee.

You'll get an orange slip a few weeks later. Note that in addition to the price of the plates and the registration fee, you'll also get your bill for the annual car tax. For my rather-average car, that tax was CHF780- last year.

If memory serves, it will be pro-rated between now and the end of the year. You'll get a full bill starting next year. I bought my car in December and was billed for the remainder of the year as well as the following year when I registered the car -- not sure what the cut-off date is.

Just in case you weren't aware of the tax -- it can come as something of a shock if you're not expecting it.

Re: Registering car tomorrow

you need:

grey card with all info on car
proof of insurance; they will know if you got it but it is best to be overprepared.

plates were for me 100 chf
registration was 175 (including inspection so it will be 0 i think for you)

That should be all you need

The bill for your license will arrive in the post, but unless you're opting for "special" plates, you'll be charged for and issued with the plates over-the-counter at the SVA office. Don't forget to note what shape of plates you need!!! Then you're good to go.

As ever, best to take all docs with you

That's either very new, or specific to BS, as you certainly don't need one here.

When my wife (then girlfriend) went to register the car my daughter bought this past May, she just needed the grey card, and the insurance (which was done electronically), but she also took a photo-copy of my daughter's license, though I'm not sure if that was necessary as she registered a motorcycle for a friend of ours this past Friday, and only had the grey card and insurance.

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Might be specific to Basel...

This is the webpage:
http://www.mfk.bs.ch/fahrzeuge/fahrz...erwechsel.html

It says you need the registration papers, the insurance policy and this "Abtretungserklärung" form...

It seems like the previous owner agrees that all taxes he already paid for the current year are transfered to the new owner by signing this form...

Actually, you missed this part "Unter einem Halterwechsel versteht man, dass ein Fahrzeug mit dem dazugehörenden Kontrollschild an eine andere Person oder Firma abgetreten wird."

i.e. the new owner keeps the old number plates, thus the taxes, etc.

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Fingers crossed I have everything.

It's been purchased from a dealer and they have posted me the registration documents etc, so I am hoping they know what is needed. He said I had everythingg.

I did know about the annual tax, so that's ok

Size of plates, not sure. Will have to go looking.

Can I get the form online before I go?

Re: Registering car tomorrow

I'm not sure this is the correct form to complete. Could anyone point me in the right direction for the form I need to get the licence plates for my new car.

Thank you.

There is no form, just take the papers you have to your local department of motor vehicles, after having arranged insurance.

The form you have linked to is for transferring existing plates to a family member, or within a company.

Thanks Tom. That explains why I can't find a form online.

Much appreciated.

It should be easy, don't worry about it!

Just bring the papers the seller gave you (grey card if a used vehicle), and all will be fine.

Re: Registering car tomorrow

Hi All!

Thanks for all your help yesterday. Was very easy.

Grey card(?) and swiss drivers licence. Took all of about 2 minutes and I walked away with the plates.

Thanks again!

Matt
