Found License on the ground

I found a Driving License of a woman named Debra. I think I found her on Facebook but she hasn't replied to my message. I guess at this point I should just turn it in... But to whom? The police? The Verkehrsamt?

Methinks, you should best turn it in ASAP to either.

The "Debra" you contacted on FaceBook may not even have been the right person anyway, regardless of if there was a profile photo or not...

Give it to the cops. In the event you did track down the right Debra she's probably a little wigged out you found her on facebook and know her address now.

Re: Found License on the ground

Do the right thing and hand over to the nearest police station. A while back, someone on here found a Halbtax card, but was more interested in getting to know the owner, a female, on a social group site - not a good idea me thinks.

Re: Found License on the ground

You might be able to hand it in at the post office, strangely enough.

I dropped my work permit on the street. Somebody found it and took it to the nearest post office, and it was delivered back to me the next day with a compliment slip from Die Post.

It's perhaps not a standard service, but it was very much appreciated.

Re: Found License on the ground

wow, that was a great read.

The whole story is, I was in southern France last week on holiday with my wife and kids, and last Sunday morning we were shopping at an outdoor market when I found the driving license on the ground. Since it belonged to someone from Switzerland, who presumably was also on holiday, and knowing the French government institutions are not the most reliable (the Postal Service was on strike, again, while we were there), I figured I'd try to find the woman online using what little info was on the card, and otherwise I'd drop it to the Police or whomever once I got back home. I was actually hoping to minimize the time the woman was without her license in case she was staying in a hotel close to ours.

I do know her address, which I found on search.ch, but not her phone number. It took very little in the way of stalking behavior to find her on Facebook and LinkedIn (on that other thread someone commented that Facebook is, by its nature, built for stalkers and stalkees). I don't really see what the big deal is. You enter a person's name and location in a search box, and if they allow their info such as photos, etc to be seen, you can match them up and send them a message. Hardly creepy. I even wrote the message in a way that only the real/correct Debra would know.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll drop in to the Verkehrsamt or the Post tomorrow.

Hopefully Debra doesn't turn up in a shallow grave, or else you'll have quite a bit of explaining to do occupational hazard of being a 'good samaritan'.

Re: Found License on the ground

If I were still in the US I would worry for all the personal unhappy consequences for the good Samaritan of using sbdy's fully public info to help that person. Luckily, I am no longer, nor am I the finder anyway. But if I were the finder in CH, I would just post a note back to the person's address to let him or her know his or her DL has been turned over to wherever it was.

When in the US actually, I found a wallet, dropped it at a police precinct with little hope of it being actually processed, yet also called (not write !) the owner at her workplace which I derived from the wallet contents to let her know where I dropped it.

She was not in, i left a message.

I am in the clear.

Re: Found License on the ground

Australian licenses have your current address on them. Would make it much easier. My sister found a guys license, so drove to his house and gave it to him. He was very thankful.

All this talk of "too much information" or whatever...People, calm down. Not everyone's a psycho killer. Why, if you consider yourself someone that would generally want to help someone get their belongings back as soon as possible, do you then question another's motives?

Hack journalists who sensationalise the relatively small percentage of deaths from stalkers who 'randomly' find your info like that ... and B-grade horror movies.

Try making a deal with Chris over from this thread.

Maybe with a little surgery, some heavy make up application and a stylish hairpiece, our Limey pal will manage to keep on truckin' if his situation turns south.

Re: Found License on the ground

Yeah I don't really understand all the dramatic imaginings of stalking and police questioning. Maybe I just don't watch enough tv. I remember reading in school a study done to determine the expectation of actual involvement with the police between people who watch a certain amount of tv and those who don't. The tv watchers were ten times more likely to expect police interaction.

I had nothing but good intentions, using mainstream channels to contact someone to help them out in an unusual situation. Being on holiday in a foreign country, it would really suck to be without a license for who knows gow long she would be away. I actually just gave her my address and number and left further contact up to her. Now that I'm home, I'll just drop it to the issuing office so they can get it back to her (probably there's a stalker killer working in the office, for those who need to imagine a CSI scenario).

This type of thinking where people avoid helping each other for fear of accusation is really sad. I'd rather take the chance of being human than to live in a world where nobody stops to help a stranded motorist or injured accident victim. Im sure if I "had a lot of explaining to do", that Id just tell the truth and be free to go. No drama. No crime show.

I say just drop it off at a police station and leave it at that. I do think some people might get freaked out with you trying to post it on her FB page and plus what if it's not the right Debra?
