What goes flat faster than an fast thing going super-fast?

That'll be a race battery with the ignition left one

Jump leads should work, to get you started - but make sure you go for a long drive - preferably not at night - to let the alternator charge the battery. For a car WITHOUT regenerative braking go for a steady motorway cruise. WITH regnerative braking - drive aggressively in town/country - with lots of braking.

If you try jump starting a Bentley with an Aygo you may melt the leads - but "normal" car to "normal" car - you'll be fine

Luckily my Bently is fine and in the garage!!! not... hee hee.
I have a Vauxhall so yes its a normal car (not for most however!!) most of my neighbours are out and i tried last night but some people werent home!! I have my jump leads handy in case i see anyone who may be able to help a lady in distress!! ish...... lol.

Yes i have jump leads but my neighbours who own cars were not in last night when i knocked and they are all out today at work - I guess! Will try later if I cannot buy a new battery easily. Thanks for your help.

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

You could get a battery charger and see if that works first as will probably be cheaper than a new battery...

Try your local taxi company and ask them if they'd give you a boost (for a fee, but probably cheaper than TCS if you're not a member).

I don't care what Mimi says.. you come up with some pretty good ideas.
( then if they cant start the car they can give her a lift to local Halfords )

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

Most Automatics can be disengaged from the park position without the need of electrical power. This however will not help you as you will be unable to roll start an automatic vehicle as torque converter will not turn the engine as per a manual vehicle (and you will most likely just damage the gearbox). Best advise, will be to remove the battery charge and refit or buy a new battery. or use good quality jump leads to start and drive to the garage.

That may be true of older autos, but many modern ones require a signal from the brake pedal being pressed before they'll disengage the gear lock, So without battery power you're stuck in Park, as per the OP.

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

Most automatics have electric solenoid that can be manually activated / moved to allow for the vehicle to be taken out of park, you either need to know where to look or have pen handy as most german cars have a hidden hole to release the shift lever. Only the very latest vehicles without shift levers can be more difficult.
That said it is normally easier to just connect jump leads.

Have you tried this on recent, CANbus-wired, vehicles? Much of their functionality has moved away from solenoids and suchlike, so maybe this has too. (I don't know, you understand, so it's a genuine question)

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

Hi Ace
This is a little off topic but yes it can be done on many CANbus-wired vehicles, most of my training has been with Mercedes Benz, the release allows vehicle to removed from the park position to enable easier recovery of a dead vehicle. The day they stop doing this will greatly increase the towage bills charged by recovery agents.
