My Car Battery is Dead!!

Hi, Can anyone help with some info/advice please?
I have gone out to my car to move it off my drive after its been standing for 3 months without being driven - although i have been out and started it and left it running for ages on several occasions, but it didnt help as the battery is now dead and i cannot get the car started. To make life even harder my car is automatic and its stuck in park!!! aahhh
Other than getting the car jump started is there any other way to move it?
Im thinking i need a mechanic or a very strong man to lift it! lol.

Thanks for your help. Sarah

Doing so often causes more harm than good as the engine isn't really turning fast enough at idle to properly recharge the battery.

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

you need a new battery, letting a car battery go totally dead kills it faster then a really fast thing going super fast

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

big blue... am I correct with this tho?...

a car will still start off of a jump even tho it has a completely dead battery?
( just don't stop the thing, or gawd forbid stall, until you've got a replacement )

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

If you have a Jumbo or Landi** nearby, buy a battery charger (and extension cable if required) or "booster box". You'll have to wait an hour or so (booster box may still need loading).

**Landi have had these items in the past, but can't be 100% sure that they carry them at present. They should have a charger for about 30 chufs.

it may do, depends on how much power the car doing the jumping can provide and the draw on the car being jumped, you could end up just melting the leads

Yes, the power required is less and is only needed to fire the spark plugs and not turn the start motor (which is the big drain on the battery when you start the car).

Sorry, I thought you meant push it to start it.

Maybe.

I've done it with a bike (parking lights left on overnight, battery was down to 8V or so), had to leave BOTH running at high idle for 20 minutes before I could disconnect the jump, then rode for at least an hour before sopping (for gas). That battery lived on for another few years after that.

If a battery is just 'dead' then yes, the car should still start OK from a booster box or any other car (although make sure you have its engine running). If the battery is damaged, however, this may not always be the case. But it's very unlikely that a battery left in situ to discharge would cause any problem.

Huh?

I think you mean a BUMP, not a JUMP!

Also, modern vehicles have computers and fuel pumps that suck a few amps. My Guzzi can be bump started with a dead battery, but not my Ducatis (as they have pumps and ECUs).

Good point. Some jump leads sold in supermarkets are woefully inadequate for larger vehicles. It's a false economy to buy a cheap set which may well let you down in an emergency.

Yeah, I did - that's why I added the bit.

You can jump start a diesel as well as a petrol but not an automatic.

One of my old cars had a starting handle which was great.

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

What goes flat faster than an fast thing going super-fast?

That'll be a race battery with the ignition left one

Jump leads should work, to get you started - but make sure you go for a long drive - preferably not at night - to let the alternator charge the battery. For a car WITHOUT regenerative braking go for a steady motorway cruise. WITH regnerative braking - drive aggressively in town/country - with lots of braking.

If you try jump starting a Bentley with an Aygo you may melt the leads - but "normal" car to "normal" car - you'll be fine

Re: My Car Battery is Dead!!

n.b... you can also start jump start... in reverse...

driving home from fla years ago my brother and I stopped half way up a hill (piss break ) somewhere on I-95 in Pennsylvania... got back in the truck and it wouldnt start... sat there for awhile ( 3am-ish btw ) wondering what to do until a friendly trucker came by and asked what was wrong and he told us ..
..
just jump start it (roll start it ) in reverse.. put it in reverse.. let it get rolling .. pop the clutch

that was ALOT of fun

I used to do that 2 weeks straight when a battery died in my Nissan and the French didn't have one to fit (narrow shape and reversed position of + and -).
I would just park up or down hill and push start the car as if I were skateboarding. One meter was enough runway space to get the motor running.

As to what Vwild1 said - the idle should provide enough power to supply the car electornics AND have some overhead to recharge the battery. If the alternator is not strong enough to do that, than it's either shot, or badly engineered.

Would be great to be able to roll the car and jump start it but as its an automatic the gearbox automatically locks if the battery has died and then you cannot move it car out of PARK which works like a handbrake and so i cannot move it off the drive at all. Cant even move it an inch! believe ive tried to push it... lol!!
