What do I need to carry in the car, and can the police stop you to check ?

I understand I need a triangle, a vest (when I was told that I thought it was a joke, but I can see the reason) and a first aid kit. Does the first aid kit have a suggested content list - ie. triangular bandage and plasters or is it more or less comprehensive - suture kit and splints? Should I try to buy a pre packed first aid kit or build one up myself. We have never been in this situation before - Bangkok doesn't have any rules to speak of. If you break down you tend to find a branch of a tree and put it a metre or so behind your car. This will allow the sharp eyed motorists to avoid hitting you. Or not.

The triangle should not be in your boot either it must be to hand.

I'm sure first aid kit + safety jacket are not compulsory, but I would suggest getting them just in case.

I also carry 5l of petrol, oil, 5l water, WD40 and various other bits (aka get out of the shi* kit)

First aid kits you can buy as a complete package.

What's the recommended triangle distance 150m behind you? Can't remember now!

You may find this useful!

Are the First Aid kit & triangle required? I have niether of these. The only thing I have is the vest. And I know some people have a fire extinguisher.

The vest is now obligatory.

EDIT: Sorry, this is not compulsory for Switzerland.

Only in some EU-countries - in Switzerland it isn't.

what is obligatory: first-aid kit + triangle. Costs a ton if you don't have these and the police look for them.

Yes, sorry, the vest is not compulsory in Switzerland. Since I drive a lot is countries where it is compulsory, in my mind I must always remember to keep it in the car. Sorry to add confusion to the issue.

Is it?? I knew it was in Greece, but not in Switzerland surely? This only applies to hot med countries?

The law requires only a warning triangle to be in the car. It can be put in the trunk as well. In case of an autobahn accident it should be placed 100m from the accident right after starting the warning lights and taking persons out of the danger zone.

The vest and the first-aid kit aren't required here but in some EU countries. Also Swiss cars need the CH sticker abroad.

With all sympathy for laws about first-aid kits and vests, they're just useful if the driver knows how to use them and what to do in an accident.

To drive in Switzerland you need in your car with you:

1) a warning triangle

2) your documents (the car registration docs and driving licence)

3) your trousers...

Thanks so much for the info. I'm going to have to check for the triangle. Surely one came with the car.... but where would it be? In with the spare tire?

Yes somewhere in the boot possibly on the boot lid as in mercs, but it is recommended to remove it and place it under a front seat.

If you have a rear end shunt <cough> the boot might seize up not allow you access to the triangle

Make sure if you ever stop on any highway that you deploy your triangle. My friend ran out of petrol in a tunnel put out his triangle the correct distance behind & went off to the garage. When he got back 3 cars had crashed but as he had put out the triangle he was not held responsible, had there been no triangle the police told him the the other cars crashing would have been his fault resulting in a very big fine not to mention the insurance claims.

Whew. Mr Mini has informed me that there is in fact a triangle in the spare tire compartment thingy.... Good thing I've never been in a situation to need one! Lou had me quite nervous!

With all sympathy for laws about first-aid kits and vests, they're just useful if the driver knows how to use them and what to do in an accident.
As far as I remember, the distance is 50m at other roads.

For the vest, I would expect the majority of people able to pass a driving test would figure out how to use it. And in the dark they make a huge difference if you are trying to change a tyre or walking for the emergency phone.
