Well, to be fair, trams usually have right of way...

Re: Tram 11 crash this morning

The sad part is, sometimes there are victims.

Like many other things about Switzerland...I dislike the way roads are set up. Crosswalks right after a roundabout..plenty of blind spots, narrow roads with no possibility to avoid a collision and the utter idiotic principle, that the person coming from the right has the right of way; which not only disrupts traffic, but makes it hazzardous for cyclist and bike riders.

and they seem to exercise that right at the expense of their common-sense. At least up our end they do.

I know they have a schedule to keep and can't pander to every out-of-towner or other hapless motorist caught up in the city rush hour madness and finding themselves blocking a tram's passage, but I sometimes get the feeling they keep their speed on just so they can make the braking and bell-dinging a whole lot more dramatic.

Obviously, sometimes this is going to result in a prang.

Estimated weight of a tram = 17t

Estimated weight of an average vehicle = 2t
Estimated weight of a bicycle = 12kg

Basic law of Physics:
Force = Mass X Velocity

Common sense to me suggests to give way to the tram...... it is the least likely to be able to stop in an emergency.

The tram tracks don't move, so it's us that should pay attention.

In addition to this, for the public transport system to run punctually, disturbances should be minimised....... and we should always be responsible for our own actions.

I think in the majority of cases it works like that but there does seem to be a rather umm... aggressive element of the tram driving fraternity that seem to relish all the drama of the emergency stop and ring-a-ding-ding of their bell. Even I have been able to read a situation that there is a car sprawled halfway over a tram line and would have started to brake but certain tram drivers seem to leave it to the last minute, lean on the brakes and gesticulate wildly.

I understand that they are much harder to stop than a car or a bike and, believe me, I give those buggers a wide berth when I'm out and about but some do seem to have a special kind of arrogance.

Kinetic energy = 1/2*Mass X Velocity^2
So at impact, Velocity is the major factor.
Hence armor piercing bullets are light but extremely fast

Completely agree.

Truck drivers are usually especially at fault..... nobody cares if they have a tight schedule, or they are running late.

Using your vehicle (truck /tram whatever) to intimidate somebody is not only wrong, but it's stupid and dangerous.

I was implying that you know where the tram tracks are, you can see them..... and every time I see some IDIOT step out in front of a tram (or in a car), you can see that that person was not clearly paying attention.

Equally I have no patience for aggressive behaviour behind the wheel either.

OK, so it's F=ma

but you know what I mean

Eithway, a person, a car, and a tram travelling at the same speed....... tram wins every time.
