Commuting from a ski resort to geneva?

Hello,

Google says it takes 1hr 5 mins to drive from Morzine to Geneva (and 1hr 3mins from Chamonix to geneva) - and I'm guessing it can be done in less than an hour as google normally seems pretty generous.

The question is how long do you think it would take me to drive into central geneva during rush hour assuming I can't get flexitime?

Is it in any way realistic to commute from these resorts?

Thanks!

Stu

Re: Commuting from a ski resort to geneva?

I worked in the cente rof Geneva and would leave at rush hour by car. a drive that normally took me 1h20 took me many times 3-4 hours. I quit my job just for that reason. it was not possible. many of times I was in the car for 6 hours a day where it should have taken me 3 tops. most of the time was spend it that shit hole traffic. so no it is not possible in my opinion unless you leave before and come home after rush hour

Maybe if you commute by helicopter it could be realistic, certainly not driving.

In this particular case I'm afraid google is probably underestimating the journey. It will take you AT LEAST 1/2 hr to 45 mins just to get of Geneva (depending on where you are working) and there are places where you can not drive very fast at all especially in rain or snow or if you are behind someone slow you won't be able to pass. For mountain roads googles calculations are really too optimistic, IMO.

Never mind the fact that getting in and out of Geneva is a PITA on any given work day, on Thursday & Friday you'll get plenty of additional traffic up to the resorts and on Sunday and Monday you'll get plenty of additional traffic back down to Geneva.

I find Chamonix to Geneva is 1.30 if you leave Chamonix @5.30 am. If going to Carouge you can even find free parking in the street. Last year I did this 30 Thursdays in a row mainly in winter, snow added 30 minutes to the journey.

Many French nurses living in Chamonix work in Geneva at night, 12 nights a month pays 2-3 times a full time job in France.

Like they all said.....but not just for Geneva but for any ski resort. I live less than one hours drive from the Jungfrau ski region but in season it takes significantly more time ESP to get back. Wherever possible, take the train

Re: Commuting from a ski resort to geneva?

Thanks guys, very useful!

I think I'll get a studio apartment in the alps and just do weekends then!

If I hang around in Geneva until about 7pm-8pm on a Thursday/Friday am I right in guessing I can then get a pretty clear run then to the resorts? Come to think of it is it even safe to be driving so late on a mountain road (assuming I have 4x4 and chains)?

Cheers,

Stu

p.s. I would use the train but I think they only go to swiss resorts where the accomodation is so much more expensive than in France?

I'll second this even if I won't go as far as to say they are not safe. You do have to slow down a lot at night and be careful. (I think the Swiss roads are safer, better maintained. But that's not the question) In France you have the tourists who are going super slow and the locals who are barreling down the mountain like a bat out of hell in their tin pandas and twingos and you trying to go somewhere in between.

(not that i generalize much! lol)

Re: Commuting from a ski resort to geneva?

I can give you some concrete info regarding travel times from Morzine because we have a chalet in Chatel. Travel time from Morzine to Thonon is about 35 minutes in the off-season (i.e. non-winter). Thonon to the outskirts of Geneva is about 25 minutes. Then, unfortunately, you will hit the REAL traffic and just to go 5 kilometers into the center will take you another 30 minutes, give or take, depending on the red lights. It is a good, solid 1.5 hours in light/average traffic, door to door. In heavy traffic, you need to add another 45 minutes to an hour. My husband has almost missed his plane twice due to traffic and we had allowed an extra hour!

Your best bet is to take the train from Geneva to Thonon and the bus from Thonon to Morzine, but you are limited because they don't start very early and they don't run very late.

For us it is quicker, though longer, to drive around the other way (i.e. on the Swiss side) because there is a freeway all the way to Monthey.

If you have any other questions about the Portes du Soleil, just P.M. me.
