Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

A job opportunity has just come up for me (not a bad start after 2 months of looking...). One of the considerations I have to make is the commute. The office is based in Wollerau. I have no problems travelling since I'm used to commuting when I was back in England. My question is, is anyone doing a similar commute and what is it like?
Google tells me that the commute will be 1 hour - using the S-bahn to Richterswill and then a bus the rest of the way. But I've also heard it can be a short 3o min trip with a couple more changes.
Any tips would be appreciated. I plan to take a trip out to Wollerau today or tomorrow before I can decide on the job.

Re: Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

If by train and bus, it takes about 35 minutes on average.

Re: Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

I'm not sure where your office will be in Wollerau, but I used to commute regularly to a client down there and had to take a bus up from Richterswil. This wasn't too much of a problem going there but coming back was a bit of a pain as the buses only run every half an hour and then have a 2 hour break over lunch!
You need to check where the office are situated, as there is quite a large business park up the hill which is only accessible by bus or car.

Good luck with the job.

Wollerau's tiny. Surely any part can be reached with a quick walk?

The alternative to getting back is getting the train to Pfaffikon SZ and then the S8, or S8 back to Zurich HB.

It is tiny, but some businesses have a Wollerau address which is quite a schlepp up the hill from the centre itself. Too far to walk...

Can you not drive to work? It is the fastest way to get from zurich (120km/h most of the way).. and the best is there are not much traffic jam as people are going the otherway to work.. Only on Friday, I get traffic jam at the tunnel..

Unless you are staying walking distance to Zurich HB.. and your office is right at the train station of Wollerau, maybe then the time different is not that much. I strongly suggest you to drive if possible

Unfortunately I can't drive...yet. Every city I've lived in has had decent public transportation so I've been unmotivated to drive.

From my trip today, I've figured out that I can either go from either Zurich HB or Wiedikon to Wollerau in about 50 mins each way, door-to-door. Pretty much the same number of connections...I just need to watch out for the buses in Wollerau which are about half an hour apart.

Any thoughts on the best ticket to get? I'm under 26. AmI right in thinking that the GA would be the best option?

Re: Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

GA - depends a bit what you intend to do in your free time. The trip Wollerau > Zürich isn't all that expensive but if you intend to travel a lot in Switzerland at the weekends, it's a different story. Another possibility is the 1/2 Tax Abo. See the Sticky in the Transport section and do a little bit of maths with an XL table to see how it all adds up.

Go to a decent sized train station and check at the SBB office. Whenever I want to check which is the best deal I've always found them very helpful with giving price comparisons.

Re: Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

Depending on when you start work. If you start around 10 then you can take the 9Uhr Alle Zonen ticket. It costs 114 SFR..but you can only travel after 9 am on weekdays. Weekend any time and it valid for whole Canton.

There is also a connection via Pfäffikon.
Inter Regio and S40 go from Wollerau to Pfäffikon and back. Together with the bus you have a connection every 30 mins out of wollerau and then from Richertswil or Pfäffikon to Zürich.

Check out this link.

Re: Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

I lived in Wollerau and worked in Zurich. That's what easily 80% of the residents do... in case nobody has mentioned it: You'll save nearly half of your income tax by living in SZ - so the higher rents are compared to the tax savings worth it.

If you absolutely want to commute and willing to pay a lot of tax to do so: No problem at all. While Wollerau is larger than some people here think (there are some companies HIGH up on the hills, nothing you'd walk to from the lake...), but anyway: You have an efficient bus system that connects you to the station of Richterswil. Should be pretty easy.

Re: Commuting from Zurich to Wollerau

You could also opt for the "All zones" abo from the ZVV, which cost about CHF 1900. It gives you the right to travel through all zones in Kanton ZH. I guess it is cheaper than the GA.

You need the "All Zones" abo as you exceed 5 (or 6) zones.

Generally, I agree, but it depends on your income. The more you earn, the more tax you'll save. But you'll pay the same higher rent whatever you earn.

Point I'm making is if you're earning 100k and need a 4.5 appartment, then the higher rent would end up costing you more than the tax you save.

Just need to do the calculations carefully!!

That's true, but on the other hand is Zurich not exactly a cheap place either. So if you really want as much living space as possible on one salary and work in Wollerau - you should commute from the opposite direction. Anywhere from Lachen SZ onwards gets way cheaper than Wollerau AND Zurich. And that's a ten minute commute by car...
