Another myth is chains.
These are only for very temporary use.
They are difficult to fit and difficult to remove and can be filthy.
They are most uncomfortable to drive on and will shake the car.
On snow-less roads, speeds of more than 50KPH will tend to remove them if you don't wear them out first.
Chains should not be used where there is no snow as they will last only about 20kms on tarmac and the handling and breaking will be much worse than no chains.
I keep chains in the boot in the winter for emergencies and have used them 3 times in 22 years. Chains are for tourists who know no better. I drive every winter from November to April on winter tyres - as everyone who drives on Swiss roads and is serious about safety should...
