The limit was 70km/h. I was going 65km/hour. It was night and it was my first time on that section so I was being careful. It was also like Porshe's experience where the fine itself was low but was doubled by the rental car administrative fees.

Sorry I dont believe that at all, there is something missing from the story or something you have not understood correctly.

The only road that has a minimum speed limit is the highway/motorway.

When did the Swiss get into a bilateral agreement with the UK?
I'm not sure but my best friend here in Switzerland is a detective inspector in Geneva, she told me when I was driving her and her children to church a few weeks ago.

I don't think she would have any reason to lie or mislead me, like I have no reason to lie or mislead you or any other reader...

Make sure the OP wears a different helmet when going to the Police station!
Not sure it would be such a good idea to turn up at the police station in a helmet since we'll be going either on foot or by car.

There is not a snobals's chance in hell of getting me on the back of a motorbike.

I don't really feel like I have anything to hide. I do try to obey the laws as best I can, though do sometimes make mistakes out of ignorance, which I know is not a defense, but I guess I am hoping I will be informed rather than attacked.
Unlike the UK ignorance can be used as a defence in Switzerland

It was the motorway, just outside of Biel, but the speed goes up and down as you go through many small communities in this section. That was the PAST ticket though, which was paid and finished.

I don't know what this summons is for, it just says radar infraction, which is why it seems strange. From my past experience, I would just expect a fine in the mail.

Re: Police Summons

Am I reading this right, you think you got a fine for driving less than the speed limit?!

I don't think so. If you drive 60 on the highway, than yes, you will get a fine because there the speed limit is 120. Still, somebody has to report you or the police to catch while driving like that, because obviously the cameras are not able to determine if you are driving too slow because there are jams on the highway. But on a open road where speed limit is 80, you can drive 60 because you still need to take care of the surroundings so you should adapt your speed.

How can the speed camera register that you were driving less than the maximum speed limit, this is new to me.

Are you sure you didn't do some wrong U turn or dangerous wrong way section and somebody reported you? Or you drove 120 km/h in a 80 km zone on the highway while they are doing some work on it?

Next time you meet please ask her to privide the name and date of the agreement - she should be able to quite easily, i suspect she is misinformed because no such active agreement exists.

She might be confusing the data agreement with france and then assume its the whole of EU

Re: Police Summons

Nope, the limit was listed on the fine as 70. My speed was listed at 65. The infraction was listed at -5. I double-checked because I was shocked too...but again, that's the old fine which I paid.

This new one is mysterious.

Any word Belgianmum from your partner and his boss?

I'm not so pedantic I'm afraid, what she told me curbed my speed so right or wrong it did some good, I will let the matter rest here, feel free to research more yourself if you wish or if you feel the need to make the matter clearer, I admire your attention to detail, I take people at face value.

Generally it's your speed -5 is the speed you were going for the fine, I suspect the limit was 60.

As speedometers routinely under record & the Swiss drive just under the limit there would be a huge no of going too slow fines if this was the situation. The Speed limit is the Maximium speed, not a recomended speed.

I have never seen a sign with speed limit 70 km/h. I have seen 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 and 120 but never 70.

They do exist there is one not far from where I live, it is on the outskirts of a village leading to the entrance of a fast moving dual carriageway, next time I pass it I can take a picture if you wish I've also seen 90 on the A1.

Re: Police Summons

So sorry to hear this Kristinanez- I was going to offer to come with you, but BM is much closer to you. Is there a telephone number so I can phone to ask what it is all about?

I must talk to a police friend about this fine for driving 5km BELOW - something is wrong there honestly. If you are driving at say 70km/h on the mortorway and causing traffic congestion, yes - but not 5km below!

I do wonder if it is a misunderstanding. When OH was fined was doing 66 in a 60 zone- the fine said
66 -5 61km. So he was fined for doing 6 over - 5 grace = 61 - so just 1 km over. The -5 is the standard 'grace amount' for NE (rather than 18% listed above for another K/Canton).

So in your case you could have been doing 70km/hour in a 60 zone and for the fine 70 -5 = 65km (eg 5 over the limit).

They knock off 8% from your recorded speed

and 8% of 70 is 5.6 so they fined you for doing 65 and the limit would have been less than 65.

Hope that helps

fair enough, i suspect she told you so you would slow down, but be assured there is no agreement.

I double-checked that old fine and it looks like what everyone has been saying is right (darn, I hate being wrong ). Hooray for the wisdom of a community. I interpreted -5 as the problem but it was in fact the grace applied.

Belgianmum and I are heading over to the station in the next hour or so, and I'll let you all know what exactly happens when one is summoned (unless I am mortified!)

I know that stretch of road very well and if you get flashed there don't feel too bad as everyone I know who lives in Bienne and uses this road to Neuchatel has been flashed.
The limit varies continuously between 60 & 80 in an apparently random manner and is also badly signposted - you will also be mercilessly tailgated as you try to stick to these limits..

Let us know what happens today -
