Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

So, I've got a smart phone, smart Ipad and now what would one need to add to that? Yes, got a Smart car. So before you point out that for all the smartness, I'm really not that smart in the brain area. I'll agree with you. Hence an appeal for any Smarta**e to tell me where I can get some smart winter tyres for my not so smart purchase without costing me an arm and a leg.

A tube of Smarties are up for grabs!

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

Go to ATU in Winterthur or Uster. These guys are pretty reasonable and a lot better value then garages in Zurich city.

I work near Zurich Enge Bahnhof in case you want to know where to turn up with the tube of smarties

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

Wallabies the Smarties are all yours when I'm in your direction. I work near Uster so will venture there if it's not snowing! Mind you one garage said Smart winter tyres are a waste of time - just use snow chains. Thanks a lot!

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

I've always found that www.reifendirekt.ch is the cheapest place for tyres in Switzerland. I was feeling so generous in the run-up to the holidays that I even did a quick search for you. The prices below are for complete wheels (steel) including tyres -- obviously just the tyres are cheaper.

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

You work the size out by looking at your tyres and there are plenty of people who don't know what to look for.

The following link explains what to look for

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

Thanks again, I know I'm a ditsy female but I actually managed to write down those numbers -just lost them. Did you know the smart has two different sizes, one for the back and one for the front? Well, it looks like I'm going to owe you another tube of smarties.

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

A bit of Google work and this is what I found.

145/65 R15 front and 175/55 R15 rear.

You want to look in the book that comes with the car (look in the glove compartment) to confirm these sizes before ordering tires.

Or have a look at the summer tires and they might be the same numbers. The details are on the side of the tire. You can take a photo with your Smart phone and post it if you are not sure

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

I have used riefendirekt too. The best bit is the list of local fitters. One near me was a bloke with a lockup who worked evenings as a second job fitting tyres.

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

Thanks Verbier - good idea. Actually the handbook is under my Smart Ar**! I don't think I have a glove compartment but a nifty drawer under the seat. The Smart center chap said I should get some on Ricardo auction site butone of the problems with a Smart is, I don't think all four tyres can fit in it so I'd have to go back and forwards - still love it though!

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

So that the numbers make sense and at the risk of showing what a boring bloke I am the tyre sizes work like this.

Eg 165/55 R16

The 16 is the diameter of the wheel or the hole in the tyre. The R is how fast the tyre can go so if you had a big fast car it would be v or w rated. The 165 is the width of the tyre in mm. the 55 is the proportion of the width to the height of the side wall so those fancy low tyres (low profiles) have a low number here.

Its all written on the side of the tyre and check front and back for differences

My god, I have even bored myself: sorry

happy motoring

Re: Not the Smartest Winter tyres!

No need to apologise just wondering, after reading your stuff if my tyre has an A rather than an R as it's not the most powerful engine. Tackling hills is a bit dodgy with a BMW following!

Sorry, but the R is for radial not speed in R16 look for the speed rating like a T or Z or etc when buying, right now can't remember the letters, but no need to get tires rated for 180 or 200 for a Smart, a 160 will probably do. On Riefen direct they will tell you the speed rating.
