Utter and absolute bollox. You make no accidents, you do pay less every year. Granted, you start from a higher base - but like it or not you are included ina higher-risk population.

If you actually "knew" what discrimination means, then you would've challenged health insurance premiums that vary according to domicile, which -at least in Switzerland...- is not a risk factor for health issues.
As it happens, i know what discrimination means. And it absolutely does not matter if there is a statistical proof for said discrimination or not. Most stereotypes have in fact a true core. But just because there are quite some Polish thieves does it remain wrong if you treat every Polish guy you meet as if he was a criminal. Just because there are many English alcoholics and Hooligans is it not really funny if foreign newspapers bang on those stereotypes.... just because there are really ignorant US tourists coming to Europe is it wrong to generalize it to all of them.

But if an insurance does so, its right because its scientific? I think it should be illegal to treat people differently based on their nationality. And I have not been to a country where your nationality is as important as in Switzerland.

it happens that :
_salaries of medical staff is higher in Geneva than in Valais and Fribourg.
_operating costs for a hospital are higher in Geneva than in Valais or Fribourg

same medical treatment has different cost depending on the canton. So shouldn't that be reflected in the health insurance policy?

Have you been to the States and gone through TSA ?

As sad as it is, our nationality does have an impact on how we are perceived. Its not nice, its not fair, but this is how it is.
Every system which works with multiple nationalities has to have some sort of risk control mechanism. It is not always something which everyone thinks is fine.
But it is there, nevertheless.

It's mid 08, 2.0 gasoline engine, base model RAV4. I got only the part casco, animals, theft, vandalism, weather, fire...

I was hesitating for the full as my wife will be driving it (and she will be learning with me in the car) but couldn't justify 1000 per year on damages done by me.
Are you sure that YOU are the reason the rate is high?

Good question. But yes, she is not listed as a driver yet because she has yet to start taking classes and get a permit, so yes, the only thing that makes my insurance so expensive is my nationality...

On the bright side only 3 and a half years (or so) to be eligible to get French nationality, I was told this will definitely make my premium considerably cheaper...But I really don't see the logics in that!

Thanks for all the suggestions. As the car is newish, I will change from partial casco to basic next year. But even basic was in the range of 1400.- with smile direct on comparis, but it's difficult to get the quoted price when I call, they give me excuses and offer me other products or raise the price.
With smile direct I did everything over the internet, this way they couldn't try to sell me anything more!

And a few weeks later I even received a nice goodie bag with some equipment for the car!
