Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Ended up buying Banner Power Bull at ALPES BATTERIES - Annemasse. Paid 150 eur in total with fitting and old battery disposal. 90Ah 800A CCA. I highly recommend this shop!

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

As we don't use our car much during the week, TCS put us a battery that is stronger than the original one, works good for us.

I was going to call my thread "battery charge".. would have been brilliant!

Anyway thanks for the ideas, as need battery solution for a 20 year old car (6 cyl) other than calling TCS each time

Ps on another car note, ever had the bright idea to buy your vignette at the border in euros? I did but accidently enquired on the swiss side so saved nothing on 3 vignettes today.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

I too am in need of a new battery Why does it seem so difficult to find out what battery one needs for any particular model? MSO have quoted me Fr 215 for a 95 Ah Varta Blue Dynamic for my diesel Legacy (the manual says 65 Ah) but with the caveat that "you have to check the physical dimensions of the battery that is in"

ETA are Landi no longer doing batteries? Can't see them online...

Aside from the electrical characteristics there is a bewildering number of variations on case size and style, as well as post type, size, and orientation.

What markings are on the battery which is currently in the car? Sometimes they are marked to indicate group size and pole orientation. Could you post a photo of the top of the battery and any other labels?

The battery currently in it is a Panasonic 95D26L
According to Federal that Panasonic is:

Connections: Top, Pos:RHS, SAE style post
flat top
LxWxH: 260x173x225mm
65Ah
600 ccA

Going to a larger Ah will make the battery last a bit longer, particularly if you leave the car unused for longer periods.

What you need to do is get the case dimensions of the Varta and check if it will fit your hold down clamp (Check all three dimensions of the Varta in comparison to what is in the car/the Panasonic). If the Varta also has the same pole type in the same position then you're good to go.

I thought Subaru used JIS terminal posts, like Honda?

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Thanks for looking that up. The first 2 dimensions are correct, but the existing battery is only 190 mm high, not 225.

So if your battery retainer doesn't have 35mm of additional thread (or belt, or an additional plastic catch) then the 225mm one will be too high.

Can you post a pic of how the battery is restrained?

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

You can usually look up the size/type online. I used to have problems with my battery when the car was left for more than a couple of weeks so I upgraded to the largest battery that would fit. After a while that one wasn't so good either. I tend to do very short journeys with at least a week break inbetween.
last year I bought an Exide Premium Carbon Boost from autobatterienbilliger.de via Ebay which is supposed to charge more quickly and it's been great so far. the car sat in a cold parking garage for six weeks over xmas and started up no problem. Price was 87 euros with free postage.

Landi still do batteries, saw them last month on the shelf. If you have the two round terminal type they have a few sizes.

Carefully measure your car and you can usually fit slightly smaller if short of cash, or bigger if there is space.

I have a Lupo with stop start, and a standard Landi one works fine for over 2 years now, despite being advised to get super expensive stop start versions.

Re: Car battery, where? How much?

Yes our Landi (Obfelden) has batteries. Limited selection though. Also BauHaus, Coop, Migros, Jumbo. Not many of these stock the batteries for our cars though (Subarus). Think the Migros batteries are made by Bosch. Best search around, offers can make a huge difference in cost, so cheapest place varies.

Had a good price from this place a few years ago:

Derendinger ag,
Farbhofstrasse 21, 8048 Zürich

But worth looking around and googling...

Yes I've done this as well on some of my cars in the past. Just have to make sure the terminal type and location are the same. Often where you have a smaller engine version they will fit a smaller battery, so you can also check which battery the bigger engine version (if there is one) is fitted with.

All this information can be found on-line.

We all know that, why not give us some better information?

Personally, after checking consumer reports, I would only buy Banner (Austrian) or Varta (German) batteries. As already mentioned, Landi OKAY brand are made by Varta but you would need to check for latest information.

A major problem with cheaper batteries is the powdered lead is in the form of a paste inside the battery. The paste falls out of the carriers over time and drops to the bottom. When there is enough it makes a short circuit between two cells and the battery is suddenly not giving full power, even after re-charging.
