Importing second hand vat qualifying car from UK to CH

Hi Forumites,

I'm planning on taking my RR Sport back to UK (not yet imported in CH) to sell as it's a RHD and buying a second hand RHD vat qualifying Lexus RX400 from UK to import into Switzerland but I'm not sure if this is totally legitimate as second hand cars don't usually have vat added on so not sure if I can claim on the vat. Furthermore, could the garage not charge me the vat in the first place as range rover would have done the same if i bought a new Evoque from them?

My Swiss colleagues think I'm crazy for importing a RHD car in CH but, I don't want to pay overinflated CHF price here and if I want to move back to UK then I wont have the hassle of selling the car here and buying another in UK.

I've done my maths, what documents to bring and what to change to make it CH roadworthy, and found out from Lexus in CH that I only need to change the front lights (2.5k chf, unsually expensive lights plus 400 chf mfk test fee) but I can install LHD lights in UK if I want to cut costs further.

The C.O.C can be obtained from UK for 63 GBP and I'll have to pay the obligatory 12% (8+4) importing fees of the total invoice value together with approx 300 CHF for not having the EUR 1 doc as the car is made outside of EU and that's about it. But if I can genuinely claim back the UK vat then all the costs for importing and modifications would be netted off with the vat reclaim from Saxton 4x4 car dealership.

Have I missed anything out from my import check list?

Cheers, Kash

If you buy from a private seller, that's a non starter, because they can't charge VAT. If you haven't been charged VAT, you can't claim VAT back.

If you buy from a dealer who does actually charge VAT, you need a VAT invoice and complete export documentation. If the dealer can't prepare that (or is unwilling to, as is the case for most fly-by-night second hand car dealers who do not appreciate HMRC taking a close look at how much their actual turnover might be), it's going to be a big hassle.

You also need an eu1 export certificate from the uk, and how you going to get it here once you export it and give your number plates back? You would need to trailer it here.

and keep in mind the 400h has serious battery failure issues, lexus even recommended to drivers to keep a jump start pack in the car if they have parked the car for more than 2 weeks

I'm with your Swiss colleagues on this one. Have you really worked out the hassle and time involved.

Swiss car prices used to be on par or lower than the UK's a couple of years ago. It's only currency fluctuations that have changed matters. There are still many good deals on car in Switzerland due to the 'euro bonus'. Have you looked here?

Of course if you intend returning to the UK within a few months, the situation is different...

I'm with the Swiss colleagues & AbFab too. But hey, your driving it not me. LOL.

We are looking for a car right now as well & I have to say the quantity of very good used cars on sale in this country is crazy. I can't imagine you can't find a good deal locally. There are so many good options I can't even decide which to buy.

Good luck whatever you decided.
