Modifications to UK cars when registering the car in Switzerland

Hi all, after speaking to Saint7UK (thanks again David!) I know I have to put my car through an inspection before it can be registered in CH.

I'd like to try and get this work done before I arrive in Switzerland and so I'm trying to get a list of all work that will potentially need doing. So far I will:
  • Put the car through a full MOT
  • Give it a full service
  • Change headlamps so they don't glare oncoming motorists
  • Give the engine a steam clean
Anything else I need to consider?

Cheers
Nik

Re: Modifications to UK cars when registering the car in Switzerland

Hi
We did ours recently...
Re: headlamps we ordered them in uk but had to have them fitted here ( we have kept the uk ones for our eventual return.)
You will still need to do the Abgas test once you are here
If you steam clean in uk you need to get to the strassenverkehrsamt immediately as it will get mucky again.
You do have a year before you need to change the plates though if you want.

Re: the appointment at the strassenverkehrsamt make sure you arrive just before your allotted time as they let you in on the dot of your appointment time(!)

With our new car they still left no stone unturned!! At the end he told me that our (factory fitted) tow bar was slightly too big but he would let me get away with it!!!!.........

Re: Modifications to UK cars when registering the car in Switzerland

Hi Patheon, did you import the car you owned from the UK or buy a new one and have it imported?

Yea, I will have 1 year to do the work but getting insurance for that one year is the big problem! I'll be covered by my UK insurance for 90 days but after that I wont be able to get any insurance.

Had it in uk for few months then imported it here.....we managed to keep extending our uk insurance by 90 days then again until the year was up!

It is always worth looking for a scrapyard between the UK and Switzerland that has some headlights in (or get them at a scrappy here). You'll save a fortune if you can find them - I did

And a spare set of wheels from a scrappy if you have room, to save the expensive PITA of swapping tyres.

Do you also need to put on certain kind of tyres?

You should fit winter tyres in winter - when the temperature falls below 7 degrees if you have an accident you are apparently automatically at fault. You can also be fined if you slow other traffic down because you don't have appropriate tyres for the conditions.

Some insurers have longer periods - mine currently says 180 days per year (special IAM deal). However on renewal in March I will go to Stuart Collins (www.stuartcollins.com) who have an AXA policy that allows unlimited foreign use. About 25% more expensive than a normal UK policy, about half the price of the best Swiss insurance quote I got.

Re: Modifications to UK cars when registering the car in Switzerland

Hi there,

I would say Stuart Collins were quite expensive actually. We spoke to our current insurers in the uk who then contacted the underwriters to create a insurance policy for a uk car in switzerland for 9 months. It was half the price of stuart collins but i suppose it is for a limited time. We had no problems registering our car here and we do not have to make any modifications since we are returning the car to the uk within the year.

Are you able to register the car with Swiss plates if you say you are bringing it back to the UK within the year?

Presume that is what you are given once all the checks have been done that the car has had all the required mods?
