Bring wife's car to Switzerland

Hi all,

I'll be going to work in Switzerland starting April (from EU).
I want to take a car, but have a problem (or not, you tell me): The car is registered in my wife's name.
I've read all about the car import, and the six month rule, to avoid paying the tax, But I did not read anything about this situation.

My wife is not going switzerland before September, and the car is in her name since 2008.

Do I have to Pay tax, or get a Swiss plate?
Can someone help or point me in the right direction?

Thank you so much in advance, and congratulations on this forum. Very informative.

This should answer your questions:

If you dont understand French: It says that you don't need Swiss plates till either the car or the keeper have resided more than a year without a break of three consecutive months in Switzerland. I should add that I'm not qualified to give legal advice though, so let's lean back until further notice

No problem:
Question: My car has been used by me for more than six (6) months but the papers of the vehicle are in the name of my father/ mother/ employer. How do I proceed?

A:
In addition to the documents belonging to the vehicle a declaration from the person/company shown in the documents has to be submitted. It must be clear which person(s), from when and for what reason the vehicle was used by the person(s) other than those mentioned in the documents belonging to the vehicle

Re: Bring wife's car to Switzerland

It would of course simplify matters if you transferred the car to your name.
Don't even think about importing it permanently, it just isn't worth it!
You will need to stop at the border and declare you intend to import the car.

Actually the simpler thing would be for the wife to officially import the car when she moves to Switzerland.

Once your wife has imported the car to Switzerland, she will have a full year to register it. During that time you can keep the foreign plates and insurance on the car. After that year she wither register it in Switzerland or export it to her country of origin and sell it there.

Once the car is registered here you will pay annual fees and insurance locally and they might be quite a bit higher here. So take advantage of the first year with the foreign plates.

Here is a link to a summary online: http://en.comparis.ch/immigration/in...-fahrzeug.aspx

Re: Bring wife's car to Switzerland

This all depends where the car is coming in from you might not be able to keep it on the foreign plates unless you want very expensive and complicated insurance.

You have to remember you won't be resident in your country anymore and the cover may not be valid.
