Looking for an interesting car ...

I'm still driving around in my rather lovely British registered JCW Mini Cooper S, but of course I'm on borrowed time and will have to return it to the UK sometime between now and next February. I'm not going to try to import it as it's the earlier dealer-fitted JCW kit and that was never sold over here, so it will probably mean getting a type approval and that is not worth doing as it will still be a RHD car.

I'm looking around for something different to replace it with ... I'm very taken by C55 or C63 AMGs, or maybe an older model M3 or Alpina B3. I've seen some but the prices seem exorbitant compared to UK prices. For example there's one in Zug at the moment going for 40k CHF (say 35k with haggling) whereas a year younger LHD car is currently advertised at 19k (say 28k CHF) in the UK.

Where would you start looking for this kind of exotica? I'm not sure I'm ready to start trying my luck at auctions, and I prefer not to buy from complete strangers.

Is there anyone on the forum have good connections with dealers that are taking this kind of thing in on exchange?

Re: Looking for an interesting car ...

It would be good to have the link to the "one" in Zug - you don't mention what it is!!

Cars in the UK are currently very cheap because of the currency move. Going from 2.2 (the approximate rate for the noughties) to 1.5 as it is now - makes a difference - a big one.

Historically there was very little difference in the pricing - some cars would be cheaper here - some more expensive. In fact - new cars a few years back were cheaper here than there.

Cars generally depreciate less here than in the UK - and at the bottom end of the market prices remain higher.

Anyway - in the RS4/C63/M3/B3 market - you'll, in the end, pick the one that you prefere. The B3 is the softest most comfortable. The M3 the most rewarding to drive. The C63 the tyre smoking rumbling lunatic. The RS4 the all season answer. (unless you take the B3X).

Re: Looking for an interesting car ...

BMW Bavaria in their used car lot in Cham have a 2003/4 C55 in silver. Full spec as far as I can tell but no bluetooth. About 80,000km. It was still there this morning when I drove past, but it's not on the listing at the moment. They were asking 39,900 but the guy I spoke to a month back said he'd take 35,000 ... I reckon you could probably knock him back more. It has a set of winter wheels with it as well.

I have owned a lot of BMWs and only two Mercs, but the C320 Evo panorama coupe I had about 5 years ago was one of the nicest cars I've owned. The AMG would ease my power withdrawal pangs .... I had to sell my racing Elise for financial reasons before coming over here (230bhp on 700kg) so right now I'm in the mood for some raw torque.

Having said that my wife had a D3 Alpina before we came over. I prefer the Alpina approach over the M3 - reduce weight and improve handling before adding power - it's more of an intelligent racing approach. So I'd probably melt for a B3. I didn't even know there was a B3X ... if there was that sounds very interesting!

I'm not in a rush by the way - that's why I haven't walked in to Bavaria BMW and made an offer on the AMG. I love the Mini and I may as well use it while I have it. But it will have to go sooner or later, and I don't need to worry about selling it later as it's on finance and I can hand back the keys in August if I want to.

Re: Looking for an interesting car ...

Worth looking at the show room of Auto Kaiser in Zug.

They have several locations around Zug, but your best option is popping into the one on Baarerstrasse.

If you are driving towards Baar from Zug, it will be on the right hand side.

cheers

B3X - it managed 8.7l/100km on a return trip to Davos (from Zurich) over the weekend. Try doing that in the Merc or M3

Yes it would, if it was a third of the price. Come to it for a third of the price you could have the real thing (Elise) ... but I've been there and done that!

That's pretty impressive! No, a C55 wouldn't make that.

Here's an auction coming up that might be interesting to just window shop at and talk to other car experts:
