Taxis ( standardisation of them in CH )

This is not a rant about prices or service but rather something I've noticed the other day. Why aren't taxi fleets standardized in Switzerland? As in, the same car/color etc. I was in Munich the other day and all cabs were yellow and most of them were a Mecerdes E class (either a wagon or the sedan).....here in Switzerland it seems, that there is ample liberty to what a taxi can be. I've seen anything ranging from a Mercedes S600 to an old beat up Toyota to a dinky little Chevy/Daewoo box on wheels. Does anybody know?

Because it is not regulated.

Re: Taxis

there was a motion.. I guess before the GE city council a few years back to have all cabs painted yellow.

the cab drivers were in uproar.. they hated the idea... I suppose because in many cases in addition to being a taxi these cars are also their personal cars.

why?
that is the question,

The re-sale value will be the main reason I guess, though it just could be to spite you..

I dunno, to encourage a bit of free enterprise maybe? Cabs in the UK are not generally so regulated either, apart from black cabs in London, I presume.

Re: Taxis ( standardisation of them in CH )

Possibly because there isn't a manufacturer producing a "made for taxi's" in Switzerland.

Germany has Mercedes. The E-Class has been the taxi of choice for centuries (well it feels like it anyway). Many moons ago Mercedes used to always test their new E-Class on taxi-drivers - to get feedback. Taxi-drivers purchase their cars at deep discount.

UK has the Black Cab - or whatever company now owns it - probably chinese.

The far east has the Toyota Crown - complete with vinyl seats - hmmmm

The US had the Checker - and now has? Well mainly Crown Victorias (Ford) or the GM full size.

The rest of the world sort of muddles along with whatever they can find.

In Switzerland you do quite well, Taxis will often be of a high quality (S500 Merc), but they are expensive - which might explain the cars.

Not too long ago I was in a Merc that had clocked just 300km

London has the black cab. The rest* has rusting Vauxhall Astras with sticky seats, a permanent whiff of spilled Saturday-night WKD and hamburger, and a GPS you type your postcode in yourself because the driver knows neither your town nor your language. (* well, my hometown anyway).

But at least they were cheap

The thing that gets me, is the extraordninary price you pay here for the lack of choices and inferior quality of products and services. Being pricey is one thing...but being price and have nothing to offer is definitely a negative aspect of this country.
They heard your prayers. Now there is choice.

No local car manufacturer to subsidise? Most German Lšnder regulated the taxi color to be the famous pus, sorry, "Hellelfenbein". Through sheer luck, only German manufacturers offered that color.

I understand you people's input but it's beyond me, why they don't have an agreement with for instance AMAG? Wouldn't that drive purchasing and maintenance cost down?

What, you want all those different taxi companies and regimes under one roof so they can "sort out their differences and find common ground" - how long have you been here again?

Certainly not, but it would make more sense to standarize a fleet and its service, rather than having a range of highend luxury cars along with hoopties within the same company. It would also make it easier to retain frequent customers IMO.
