Speed camera query

Passed a camera today at significantly higher than the indicated limit on the bike today (slightly annoying scenario, but lets leave that, as it's indefensible at the end of the day) near Sihlbrugg.

It didn't flash (it definitely should have), but I wonder if it's not meant to? Ie is it infrared or something?

The camera was a single mobile grey box, approximately 1.5 ft wide, by 3ft tall, and a foot wide. It has an orange rectangle, and what looks to be a clear rectangle for the camera; the rectangles are replicated on both sides.

I've seen this box before in Sihlbrugg itself, but this time it was outside the town limits.

Unfortunately, I don't have a photo, so hope the explanation make sense.

Edit: closest I can find is this, but one of the windows on mine was orange. And 7ft in the air, on a stand.

Re: Camera query

They don't flash bikes as far as I am aware, my other half has tested it out many times

or this?

In any case, how would they identify you on a bike? It's not like you've got license plates....

Re: Speed camera query

They need a hard surface to bounce their EM signals off of (radio wave, laser whatever). Clothing isn't hard, and the surface area of the bike itself is too narrow and highly convex so would disperse any incoming beam. You're pretty safe there. It's when the cops start keeping speed with you and you are speeding that you can be officially caught, as happened to an ex-boyfriend of my sister once.

It probably depends on the camera type. This one in Baden flashes bikes as well. This flashes me all the times I ride down the bridge. It's not a speed trap, the bridge is only for buses therefore it flashes everything that moves on that bridge, regardless of the speed:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=baden&...a&deg=180&z=20

It's the white square on the first lamp post on the bridge. One night if I'm drunk enough I'll have a ride down the bridge with my buttocks exposed to the open air just to pay my respect to the badener coppers

By the way, if you want to know your enemy have a look here:

These guys produce the speed traps used in Switzerland, have a look at the different models and read their pdf product sheets

Re: Speed camera query

You won't ever get a speeding ticket on a push bike. You might get one for reckless cycling or ignoring stop signs or jumping red lights, but as you have no way of knowing your speed you're immune from speeding tickets or alike. Don't try drinking though, that offense has the same limits as motorists I believe.

And yeah, you're my speedy Gonzalez cycling hero for the day if that helps your ego

Woops...I should probably point out I was on the Ducati at the time! Still wasn't flashed though...

I used the pic to show the camera type - apologies if it looked like I was on a pushbike.

Passed it overtaking 2 cars + a truck, on about the only non-solid white line section approaching Sihlbrugg (from the Zurich direction). I think it's set up to catch them coming the other way, so technically I went through it backwards, if that's possible.

Thankfully, I can't see mine here...mine was basically a double-sided version of the one in the pic, hoisted up on a 7ft post.

Some dont' flash. They are only there for prevention. But from time to time they may still flash.

Re: Speed camera query

Radar units are harder to set off on a bike, laser units are a different story.

Coming down into Albisriedendorf from Ütliberg there is a fixed laser camera set at 53km/h. I think most of the photos it takes are cyclists. My "mate" has set it off a few times.

The Traffic-Observer LMS is in fact a double sided version. See PDF Perhaps somebody nicked the two digital cameras that are inside.

For the one shown by silverburn they have some times more cases than interiors and will swap them from one to the next.

I am sorry, but that is a myth. Although it is technically difficult to measure cycling speeds using fixed cams, mobile cops can surely do it. All they need is an adequate laser gun. And they WILL give you a ticket if you speed down the hill at 70 km/h when driving in the village where you are only allowed to go 50 km/h.

The argument that you have no way of knowing your speed and therefore are immune for tickets is nonsense. As a cyclist it is your own responsibility to keep within the speed limits and comply with any other traffic rule. That means that if you drive fast, you take the risk yourself that you go faster than allowed, with or without speedometer.

Even fixed radars sometimes flash cyclists, had a mate who enjoyed setting it off, even posed for the camera with a cheeky grin.

This is the "myth bit" according to your clearly extensive research work:

"In einer Gemeinde im Domleschg staunten die Polizisten nicht schlecht, als zwei Schülerinnen auf ihren Velos in der Zone 30 mit 41 Stundenkilometern geblitzt wurden. Wie ein Sprecher der Bündner Kantonspolizei auf Anfrage sagte, seien die beiden nicht angehalten worden. Eine Busse sei unverhältnismässig, da Velofahrer keine Möglichkeiten hätten, ihre Geschwindigkeit zu überprüfen."
