How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

I know I saw it in the past on this forum, but I cannot find the link, despite all my searches. I want to remove the 2011 car tax from the windscreen, and I remember reading it was a very messy business. What are the tips? Nail varnish remover? White spirit? Smashing the windscreen?

Many thanks

Re: How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

You can buy 'vignette removal kit' at shops, which consists of a 'marker pen look alike' chemical liquid dispenser and a small plastic scraper. Try Coop Bau+Hobby or similar shop.

razor blade to get the sticker off, vinegar and a scouring sponge to get the sticky residue off. The vignette kits are a waste of money!

Re: How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

As above, something sharp to get the sticker of, careful not to scratch the screen, WD 40 if it is handy to get the sticky residue of, and polish the screen. 5 minutes max to do.

Re: How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

For me the trick is to make sure you stick the new one where you can get to it to get it off next year.

One year I made the mistake of putting it in a bottom corner, out of my line of sight. It was quite easy to get to for sticking it on - you only need to get your finger tips there. It was a nightmare getting the thing off the next year.

It's the middle top (behind the mirror) for me now. Easy to deploy a penknife and any solvent (soapy water seems to work for me).

Re: How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

I just removed mine with a hairdryer. Very easy and tip came from one of those LONG threads cited above.

You may need a bit of rubbing alcohol or something if some of the glue remains.

PS - I removed a 2012 vignette from one car (rental) and moved it to another (rental). Did I break several laws???

On a related note, I need to change my windscreen due to an ever growing crack.. do I write off the CHF 40 I paid for the 2012 Vignette or can I get a replacement?

I'm surprised that you managed that without completely tearing it into tatters If indeed you managed it without breaking any part of it then good luck. As far as the Swiss are concerned it's illegal - and they therefore fabricate the Vignette in such a way as to make the re-use impossible - or so I thought. Just don't get caught.

Answer to that and several other questions here (such as placement), looks like it should be covered by your insurance.

Re: How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

With a good 5 minutes of the hairdryer, it softened up quite a bit. Then I carefully teased it away from the windshield. Wasn't easy and it wrinkled a little bit so I flattened it out on a piece of cellophane.

Have removed it a 2nd time in anticipation of another rental in 2012. Not really fair to charge me multiple times for a 1 week trip to CH with a Spanish rental car...

Re: How do you remove car tax from windscreen?

I believe 3m makes a kit to do this. My husband and I received an extra one his parents have, we followed the instructions and it came off quite easily. I'm not sure where they got it, perhaps a Bau and Hobby or a gas station.

Use Hairdryer to warm up the Vignette
The glue gets very soft, peel off the vignette
Use glass cleaner to remove traces of glue

Quite easy, no special tools required.
