Re: Warranty for buying second hand car privately?

depends on how old the car is, generally speaking when buying from garage, they do offer warranty (one year , renewable afterwards) that covers damages other than accidents.

see this thread

'Quality 1' car warranty query

I had quality one for one year offered when I bought my car, luckily never used it, and also did not renew it

I think if you are buying privately (from a private seller - not a car dealer) you probably wont get a guarantee. If the car is more than 10 years old though, the car will need to pass the MFK test before you buy it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Warranty for buying second hand car privately?

TCS (Touring Club Suisse) used to offer warranty insurance ("garantie tcs") for private parties, but I can't find it on the web. You may want to give them a call to find out.

Other than that I found this PDF document which seems to indicate that ACS (Automobil Club der Schweiz) is currently offering warranty insurance ("Garantieversicherung") to its members.

Re: Warranty for buying second hand car privately?

Theoretically any of the warranty suppliers will give you a guarantee - however:

1) Expect to pay around 500chf per year
2) The car will need to be inspected by an approved garage - and any issues repaired BEFORE you take out the warranty. All at your cost.

This is one of the reasons why it tends to be better to buy a car from a dealer. The cars I have bought, and have needed warranty work, have all needed it with the first few weeks - and each time the garage has paid the excess!

Yes, the place we got my wife's car from gave a 1 year guarantee (5k on the power train).

I always get a car checked by my local garage before the warranty is up.

Just to add to this, the garage which inspects the car and sells you the warranty is responsible for any repairs in the first month of the warranty period. So they will not sell you a warranty if you refuse to repair everything that they find during the inspection.

see this thread

'Quality 1' car warranty query
I bought a car from Autoschiess near Volketswil and it came with a Quality 1 guarantee. Bloody useless. It did not cover any electrical claims or any part which failed that was not inside the engine or gearbox. And it was limited to something like 10 or 15,000kms. When my ABS failed a couple of weeks after buying the car, I was more or less told to p!ss off. Then when the intercooler burst and the engine lost half of its power, I was again told that it was not considered as a part of the engine and was not covered under the warranty. So the fact that the car was un-driveable and left a trail of blue smoke behind the car wherever I went was not deemed as an engine problem!

In my opinion, total sh!t. Best to really look into what those warranties are covering before you buy. (And by-the-way: I think Autoschiess are a bunch of crooks and I do not recommend them. They just buy cars as cheap as possible, give them a clean and then sell them on with little or no inspection)
