Car import: verkehrsamt appointment after customs deadline expired

A letter from Zurich strassenverkehrsamt just arrived causing us a small panic

We moved here at short notice in January with our new car bought in December. That meant we had to pay import duties but OK
After clearing customs last Tuesday we were given 30 days to register the car in Switzerland and told we are not allowed to drive it here after that deadline passes
The next day I applied for a appointment with the strassenverkehrsamt I could not have done it earlier as customs clearance documents are required to apply

Today a letter arrived giving a termin on 29 may while our 30 days expire on 8 may! It also says jn bold type that no earlier appointments are available.

My husband needs the car to get to work and it looks like he won't legally bd able to even drive it to the appointment.

Has anyone experienced something similar ? Was there a solution?

Thank you
A

Hello - i don't have the time to check but in my opinion, if the Admin gives you a termin for later, and the car is registered somewhere and insured and in good condition, i cannot see an issue with anybody.
Enjoy the week end

Sorry, I forgot to stress that i don't have the time to check and that it is my opinion, and that I cannot see an issue. Maybe I should stress again for fridge below that I did not check anything and am only giving an opinion.
I did not mention that i have no intention to underwrite anything, nor to inverse the sense of rotation of the Earth, but in case I have to, I also disclaim any intention to have the Sun evolve around the Earth for a change. Just to be idiotic. I also do not claim to be an expert in denial of import, or import of denial.

Congratulations, you get the honor of using the "tagesschild"!!

It's a temp license plate, max of 4 days at a time, and you have to go in person to the Strassenverkehrsamt to retrieve them each time.

Not a single other option if they've given an explicit 30 days.

This, is idiotic. At you going to underwrite the fines and permanent denial of import if they get caught?

Don't just tell people to go for it if you don't have the faintest clue of what you're talking about!

again, If you don't know, and don't bother to find out, don't give advice! I don't care if you give some pointless disclaimer, your opinion is wrong - and in this case dangerously so. It may come as a shock to you, but some people actually look to this forum for help on a real issue, and would like an actual answer - I know I've been one of them on many occasions, and I'm sure, like me, they had no problem speculating without your help.

The penalty if caught on the road past the allowed time, is that the vehicles registry will be flagged, and permanently banned from Swiss registration!!

so, op, you need to either appeal to the Zollamt directly and see if they'll extend you the usual year (unfortunately unlikely as they don't like to admit concessions), resign to the amazingly expensive daily plates or become intimately familiar with public transport.

Re: Car import: verkehrsamt appointment after customs deadline expired

Fridge is right you would have to use tagesschilder from first read BUT... Why did they only give you 30 days? Where did the car come in from? What plates is it on now and where is the insurance based?

I take it you have paid the duty in full now and a stammnumber has be issued?

Are you sure this is 100 percent correct? Sounds to me like the car came in on export plates and the issue lies with the temp plates not the car matriculation...

I'm very curious and I can surely get to the bottom of this if you'd like. We deal with covering a vast number imports.

Why do people respond to these things offering opinion/advice without being sure that the advice is correct

The tagesschild is the most obvious answer and would certainly keep you legal until you can get the car registered etc. If the car has been declared, taxes paid and stammnumber etc issued, I'd love to know why you only got 30 days not the normal year to complete the registration process, so good luck and please let us know how you got on

Re: Car import: verkehrsamt appointment after customs deadline expired

There are 2 methods to import the car. One is that you are 'moving house' and you declare the car as part of your 'moving stuff'.

If this is the case - eg you are moving from abroad into Switzerland, you would have had to get and complete a Form 18.44 at the border - this is where you declare that your imported possessions - including the car - are being brought in in a move. Then you get a year - you can request the MFK / Prüfung at the Strassenverkehrsamt, and if you've given them the 18.44 you should be good for a year. If you got the 18.44 and didn't give it to the Strassenverkehrsamt then call them and get it to them ASAP - that will give you a year instead of 30 days.

The other way is what I did last week - import a car when you're already resident here. In this case you don't fill out an 18.44 at the border, you just pay the VAT and import duty, and get the 13.20a - in this case you really do have only 30 days to register.

I applied for my inspection today so I'm hoping the appointment comes in the next 30 days or I'm in the same boat as you...

In any case it would be best to call the Strassenverkehrsamt and point out this contradiction - if they've given you 30 days and can't honour it, then perhaps they would give you special dispensation. I called the Strassenverkehrsamt before importing my new car and they told me I can expect a 3-4 week wait for an appointment. 29.05 is a scarily long way away - I could imagine they would low-priority you if you're on an 18.44 deal to favour those who have only 30 days but otherwise - yeah it's a contradiction.
