It's similar if you load up a Swiss Pass or ski card. If their equipment isn't working or they don't have it then you have to get out the pages of print-outs.

The other month there was a technical problem and all the ticket machines were out so people had to pay on the train. The inspector's card payment machine wasn't working and I was more or less shaken upside-down for whatever money came out. I tried 5 or 6 cards but the guy insisted there was nothing wrong with his machine. Ended up paying 70 euros in cash for a 70 CHF trip.

Sounds to me like you got robbed. I've had numerous times when my Swisspass could t be read by their equipment (it's loaded up with a GA), and I've never had to pay anything, let alone in cash on the train!
But Landers did not have a problem with his Swisspass?

He wrote the ticket machines were out so people had to pay on the train.

He then wrote he could not pay with a credit/debit card on the train because the inspector's card payment machine wasn't working.

Do try to stay awake at the back of the class
