| | Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland? | Quote: | | | | | I got a speeding ticked in CH. I was in a rental car from Germany when it happened. I decided not to pay because I don't give a flying 'uck for CH authorities. Just the fact that they try to get drivers for speeding right at the border, hanging their radar pistols while standing in the middle of the road, was enough to disgust me. And enforcing foreigners to pay 40 francs at the border? These guys are unbelievable extortionists.
I was cruising at 60 km/h (got registered 55 in the fine) at 7 am on a Sunday. Not an excuse, but there wasn't a single soul on the road at that time. About 100 fine for this. Now, one year later got a new letter (never responded to them) and the amount is now over 300.
After some searches in google I found that the limitation period for traffic ofenses in CH is 3 years. I don't intend to ever set foot in CH, but if I do it will be certainly after these 3 years.
My only doubt is if this really is applied to these fines, since they seem to treat unpaid speeding fines as real criminal ofenses.
Btw, I really do not want to ever go back to CH, I was there only 2 days and eager to leave almost from the start. But I obviously do not want to be barred by their holigan police in an unlucky connection flight in there. | | | | | Yawn... and one day you may grow up too...

... and very soon the German police will be knocking on his door at 6 am, and then he will be back on here asking for advice. What an idiot!

I'm one of those who don't want to pay speeding fines in this country. Actually, I don't think I know anyone, anywhere, who wants to pay speeding fines. But I pay them, because it's the right thing to do, just as I've paid fines in other countries.
I'm also one of those huge ignorants who think that the German and Swiss police cooperate in collecting fines, but my belief is only based on fact, not conjecture, like yours.
You go ahead and apply your own personal version of morality to your life -- it is your life, after all -- but don't be too surprised when your past catches up to you. With interest, and then some.
Happy motoring in the dwindling number of European countries where you can speed without fear of the Swiss catching up with you. | The following 4 users would like to thank for this useful post: | |

The question about the limitation period remains. Do the speeding tickets really expire after 3 years or not? Knowing this for sure would really help all the imoral foreigners that fall in the traps of swiss extortionists. | | | | | Surprisingly, you may find that nobody here wants to help you. It's a shame, I suppose -- for you, anyway.
However, I'm prepared to help a little, because I'm nice like that. "Immoral" has a double 'm'.

But why do you feel that paying speeding fines is the "right thing to do"?

I do not need your help. Maybe you just want to have some more posts added to your 5000 'dude with no life' posts. Life is really boring in Switzerland, huh? A speed camera flashed as I went past yesterday but there was a car on the other side at the exact same time, so I'm not sure if it was me. I confess I do not know how fast I was driving (instinctively put the brakes on after I saw the flash so speed had dropped by the time I'd checked it) and I did not know the limit for that road (I'm guessing 50), but I didn't think I was speeding. Usually the car tells me if I am exceeding the limit (screen on the dash beeps and flashes) and it hadn't, so I assumed I was ok?
How long before I know I'm in the clear?? I hope it was the other guy! |

It depends on city/gemeinde or canton.
It took Stadtpolizei ZH about 4 weeks to send a 51 at a 50 ticket to my gf.
It took GR (I think) KP in August 2013 about 2 or 3 working days to send me a ticket for doing 90sth in an 80 during a tight spot on the way up to Bernandino.
