TGV - So why do I need a dog ticket ?

So, this morning I board my first TGV train, 4 hours to Paris.

Been a heck of a challenge planning the trip, along with the hunde. His fare has been half mine virtually for whole trip to UK and back. I don't necessarily begrudge paying for him, I would rather pay the 100chf cost for a return flight twice though, and pop him on seat next to me on a plane, just not possible.

But why do I need a ticket on this TGV for him at such a cost?

There is less leg room than standard sbb trains

Chairs are smaller

Carriages more tightly packed

I've paid for two tickets, dog and me, and we had to work out where to put the dog. Thankfully guy next to me has done a leg shift manouvre so I can sit wide eagled and dog has just enough room between me feet and seat in front of me.

I am not expecting his own Royal dog seat but attleast some room if he has to pay a fare.

If people's bags, cases, general shite is larger, taking more room, and gets a seat, I just don't understand the dog fare?

It's like when we reach Calais, set price for a car, doesn't matter how many people, add a dog to that car and add 50% of price again. And it's not allowed out the car?!!?!!!

Quite profitable for the genius who thought up this scam!

I agree with you; it would seem logical that if you are required to pay a (partial) fare for your canine companion there should be a place that affords more leg room so that you and your dog have the opportunity to sit together somewhat comfortably without having to perform acrobatics to fit or your dog having his head or rump crammed under another seat like a piece of carry-on luggage.

I am glad for you that your dog is not a Great Dane!

Re: TGV - So why do I need a dog ticket ?

If TGV didn't have reserved seating, I'd put dog on seat and make a stink about it when challenged. But alas... it wouldn't be appropriate because the odds of having a neighbor on a TGV train are very high.

You have my sympathy.

Maybe next time, rent a car? That's how I'm getting to Frankfurt, because the thought of trying to juggle two dogs, luggage and do it with the DB is just a headache enough. So renting a VAN in Lörrach and driving it one way for the low low cost of 130 Euro. Cheaper than the train, and more convenient!

One tip is to travel First Class. On the TGV, the dog only pays 2nd class so you both get more room. Worked for us with our Lab many times between Zurich and Paris.
