Swiss Train Discounts ( APEX Advance Purchase )

Hi Guys,

is there any benefit to booking SBB trains in advance, are they cheaper? I've heard they're not and cost the same on the day as in advance, is this correct?

Many thanks

Dan

For cross border journeys, true for most operators, it is a yes.

Planning a journey in Europe?
Buy tickets in SBB Ticket Shop now. The earlier you buy the cheaper the price.
For other journeys locally, generally no.

Thanks

I was looking for trains only within Switzerland and nothing 'over the border' so i imagine something like Airolo to Lugano is in the 'local' range, tickets generally seem pretty cheap in Switzerland so happy with that

I buy my domestic Swiss tickets using my SBB iPhone app. There is no saving, and you shouldn't buy any online SBB ticket unless you're sure of using it since it's nontransferable and AFAIK nonrefundable. But it's convenient and I like the way the train controller zaps my iPhone virtual ticket with his computer.

For TGV to Paris it is almost always cheaper to collect the ticket from a French station and pay in euros. We travel via Lausanne but generally collect our tickets in Evian, having reserved on the SNCF Web site. At the same time you collect from SNCF the connecting SBB ticket for the Swiss part of the journey to Lausanne.

The "Sparbillet" option on the SBB website is somewhat cheaper. With this class of fare you must specify the exact trains you'll be taking (i.e. the times)

A sample fare, Sargans to Zurich 2nd class: 10.60 or 12.00 (time-dependent) instead of the usual 15.00 one-way.

Re: Swiss Train Discounts ( APEX Advance Purchase )

Thanks Guys,

unfortunately i can't take exact trains as i have no idea how long ill be in the mountains, walking time is going to vary especially if i see a shiney peak off the planned route i just have to climb I'll just go with the pay as you go option then.

How are the Swiss on fare evasion (not that I'm considering it!), are they quite tight if you don't have the right ticket and do they check tickets a lot?

Thanks

Don't try to skimp out on the tickets. Your using a service that must be paid for. No one wants another #&$*ing SBB FINED ME FOR NOT BUYING A TICKET thread.

You'll be caught and'll cough up a 100 chuff + ticket price fine.
There are ticket machines everywhere and you can always buy a ticket at whichever station you arrive at or depart from. If going to mobile way, make sure your ticket is valid from before the train leaves. They do check when the ticket was purchased and it must be purchased before the train departs.

What on earth is the point of asking the question if you are not considering it Have you heard of Gemeinde tickets, you can get for special outlets in your Gemeinde/Town/village- for about 40 CHF for a whole day's traveling?
