Hubby and I got our boat licenses here so we could rent out something with a bit of pulling power to go waterskiing/wakeboarding etc. During the summer we often go to Luzern and rent a boat there. It's a big lake, and plenty of room to ski etc. It is however VERY expensive. There are places where you can hire out a mastercraft and driver for an hour or so, in Zurich there is Tiefenbrunnen, or the camp site down in Wollishofen....again rather pricey.

A couple of summers ago we went down to Ghiffa in Italy and rented a boat there for a week. It was lovely, but after skiing/boarding in Switzerland, I'm glad that people here have to have lessons and pass a test, as rules just didn't seem to apply in Italy
We're planning on doing the same this summer. Looks like 180 bucks an hour for a waterski-capable boat and gear on Lake Zürich.

Do any rules apply in Italy?

I always thought it was hypocritical when places claim that they have boating restrictions due to excessive wake, but then have huge passenger boats that create massive swells. We had a lake back in the states that banned high speeds and high HP boats due to "wake", but they continued to allow these big sightseeing boats that caused waves bigger than any Jetski or small boat.

Mmmmmm. If there were any rules on the lake, they certainly got ignored!

A lot of the motor boats would come too close instead of keeping the safe distance and that was a bit scary especially when you have a kid in the water waiting for you to circle round and go back to them.

or to put it more aptly "If I can't do it, nobody should do it"
