Police pulled me over for not yielding at junction

Hi

We were driving along a local road when a police van pulled up to a junction to join the road we were travelling on. We were a couple of car lengths from the junction at this stage with other cars close behind us . When we passed the junction the police van pulled out and sounded their horn before forcing us to stop a short time later. The policeman was very aggressive (until he saw the British car licence) in telling us that we should have given way to him at the junction. We agreed and apologised to defuse the situation however we are not aware of any offence that was committed.

Anyone help us see the error here?
Thanks
Nichola

Re: Police

Was it an unmarked intersection with the police to your right? In such a case, the vehicle to the right has priority.

Re: Police

Yep, Agree with Corbets. You probably fell foul of that. Being a brit I still can't get my head around that one. Thankfully, despite having a Swiss driving license, I choose not to drive here.

It's bad enough with everything being on the wrong side, and then with the traffic laws throwing you a curve ball like that, forget it.

Re: Police

It's guite easy once you know, if there are no markings on the road give way to cars (and cyclists) from the right.

But even if you have priority still be careful and don't be surprised if someone doesn't give way...

Pity he didn't take a trip across the channel.
Might have introduced a sensible system of weights and measures.

Re: Police

Am I missing something here? from the OP it sounds like the police were joining from a side road on to a main road, are we saying that if there are no road markings that a person joining the road has priority over the person already on the road???

Yes. No matter so small the side road is.
Not really, if the road has a yellow diamond sign marking it, then that road has right of way, I believe.

Edit: My bad, just read the earlier post noting the lack of signage, so this is correct.

Yes.

How many people, and for how long, have been driving here without knowing the basics of the Swiss highway code? Quite frightening, actually.

Re: Police

Here are the full details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priority_to_the_right

It's worth learning these rules, as the Swiss tend to take the priority pretty aggressively when they're entitled to it. But as others have pointed out, unless the road is marked/signed to the contrary, traffic entering the road from the right always has priority over traffic already travelling on the road.

Re: Police

Good Lord,

comments here suggest that quite a big portion of Anglo-saxon expats have no clue about international standards in traffic rules.

Easy way to avoid mortal risks to others and themselves: information (books, websites) and guided practice (driving school?).

Authorities should not easily convert their licences, imho.

This law does not apply in Oz and thank the lord for that. The phenomenon reported here sounds like an instance of the dreaded and stupid "priorite a droite". Essentially it allows a car to spear into the passenger side of a LHD vehicle from the right. A popular way of getting rid of unwanted wives etc, place them on the passenger seat and wait for somebody to exercise their priorite a droit.

In Oz we Give Way to the right and we drive on the right hand side of the road. Completely different

Re: Police

Problem is that there are so few roads without markings at junctions, so you have to generally know about them in advance. Point in case in Zurich is near seilbahn Rigiblick, actually both sides bookending it. But only the one turning each side in opposite directions out of dozens on that road or for most roads in Zurich where the side road has priority. Can catch you unawares if you are looking out for trams, buses, cars, pedestrians and whatever else and dont know the road at all.

Re: Police

that intersection is an absurdity. and not like Zurich doesn't have the money to fix it - they are forever digging up and relaying perfectly good stretches of road.. and all this needs is traffic lights! I curse every time I drive through that one.
