Tinting windows (at home)

I'd like to get a tint on my back windows but as all things in Switzerland is super expensive (800 CHF)

The tint kits are very cheap to buy online (20$) and very easy to install (they are basically stickers)

After installing them probably you need to go get them checked and approved by some authority. Which one, TCS, SAN?

Where can I find the actual law for allowed % of tint?

Or maybe I should do it in France/Germany and do the check here?

Has anybody done this already?

Not sure if it's an easy job to get it done after looking at this video...

Least of your worries - just imagine if you can't get it all off when you have to hand over your apartment - it would cost a fortune..

Edit: D'oh... of course the OP meant a car... I thought you were referring to home windows *classic facepalm*

Re: Tinting windows (at home)

From my experience:
I bought my new VW with 70% tint (they said it was the law).
Front windows and windshield are not allowed to be tinted at all.

In the past, I also tried to DIY, made a mess and really ugly (while all the time trying to console myself it looked all right).

Go to a German or French side garage, they will probably quote you 50-70% of the price in CH. Many of them also know the swiss laws, but best to check with swiss colleagues (I do not know this fact, sorry) or Strassenverkersamt.ch

Good luck.

Re: Tinting windows (at home)

Thank you for the replies. I can try to do them but I can always go to a professional in France. I just need to be sure of the procedure of legalizing them in Switzerland.

Re: Tinting windows (at home)

do you have any experience of stretching/shrinking tint on double curvature surfaces?

if not forget about doing it yourself - it ALWAYS ends in disaster and looks crap...
get a company in DE to do it - far cheaper and you can claim the tax back.

Re: Tinting windows (at home)

Hi, I have another question with it. Do you need any certifications for the tinted windows to be accepted by the OCN?
Thanks

Re: Tinting windows (at home)

for the rear windows, not really.

you do know for 800 francs that they take the windows OUT of the car and apply the tint properly?

DIY means bubbles and cheap look. Get a pro job done

One of my neighbors actually has red and green tinted windows at home. It looks pretty much like a red light district house.
