Insurance for collecting & driving a 2nd hand car in France

Wondering if anyone's had a similar experience:

I've been searching for a particular classic vehicle for several months now & it looks like I've finally landed a (rare)good one & the nature of these things is if it's a winner, then buy it before someone else does & deal with the import formalities later. Thus, I have an arrangement with a good friend in North west France to temporarily store said vehicle in his barn until the formalities are completed. It is fully road worthy, so I intend on driving it to his place from the seller in Southern france.
Will my Swiss car insurance cover me for that journey if I inform them about it?
If not does anyone know what the score is, or am I looking at a trailer.

Re: Insurance for collecting & driving a 2nd hand car in France

Insurance seems to be a minefield. As I understand a French car needs French insurance, maybe your friend could legally own the car and insure it for you? Or maybe it would be cheaper to hire a trailer?

http://www.easyloc.ch/0501.htm

I have hired trucks from him several times, he is very flexible on rental over several days. BUT I once asked him for the price for a trailer for 2'000 Kms and he freaked out, so best not to mention (Or lie) about how far you will be driving the trailer!

Have you spoken to your local Strassenvekehrsamt about importing the car here? There might be difficulties if it is a rare car.

Ah, that's an idea.

It's actually going to be going to the UK.

Your Swiss insurance will not be able to cover it.

Sbrinz is right either French cover or trailer it to the UK is the easiest or a specialist UK broker like Stuart Collins should be able to cover it off the back for a pending import. As France is EU it is not as complicated as Switzerland and there are some further agreements in place.
