buying a used car in Vaud canton

Hello all!

I recently came into Switzerland, I am here for 1 month only; So I have no idea regarding the issues of buying & registering a car here.

Recently I decided to buy a car . I found an interesting for me variant, and now there are some misunderstandings regarding the process in general. I buy the car of a private person, which lives in different town. Since I don't have yet the insurance, I would like to bring the car right to the place where I live, pay for it, take the documents and do the plates myself when I will have the documents from my insurance company. Is this variant possible?

As I can understand from the posts here, if you have a car registration documents, it means that the car is yours. So, once I pay money to the guy, he gives me the registration card of a car - the car is mine?! Even if there is his name in the car registration document?! Am I able to recieve the plates having this document?

P.S. The car passed expirtise this year, so there is not need to make a new exterptise.

Thank you very much for any information!

Yes, however the seller will collect his plates to get the road tax back, which means you will not be able to leave the car parked on the street - but rather you'll have to have a private parking place.

Thanks for reply!

Yes, I have a private parking place just right on my place of living. What are the documents I should receive from the seller? Only the registration card? As far as I remember (I was told by a friend long time ago) there is also some document about catalyser which is supposed to be updated each 4 years or something like that. I am right?!

Yes, that comes together with the car. Every two years.

So, only these two documents are supposed to be taken from the seller? If he does not have this document, it means that I would not register it. True?

Thanks.

If he doesn't have these documents, that means the car is hot, and probably not a good idea to buy.
