Those acursed e-bikes!

Ok, as a former cyclist who is still far too competitive for his own good, I resent these ebikes...they allow Joe Public to loon about the place at velocities I would need to train long and hard to maintain.

Thing is, what speed are these limited to? 50kph?

I ask, because I actually got the hop on one today, doing my ride from Unterageri to Zurich. I managed to hop on his wheel and sit - quite comfortably - at 50kph (enabled me to do the 30km in 48.5 mins!). I was even tempted to overtake at one point, which is why I asked if their speed is capped at all.

It wasn't quite so comfortable when he held 27mph up the drag just before Adliswil mind you...I almost held the wheel, but I was basically sprinting so it was only a matter of seconds before my doors blew off. Annoyingly only 100m from the top too. Dammit. A poor show for a former Trackie!

Which is where my beef with e-bikes is; it's just depressing seeing these things fly past you - especially on climbs - and Joe Punter is just sitting there not even breaking a sweat! And the fright too - these things are silent, so only if you see them ahead of time can you get the jump on them.

For most of them the electric assistance is restricted to 25 kmh. Any faster (rare but you do see them) and they count as mopeds meaning helmets and tax are legally required.

Don't think the speed is limited, I mean how can they limit it? If Joe Blow can get 50km/h out of it, imagine what you can get out of it...

I had a test ride on one of those in Zug when they have one of those Bike days, and they're quite awesome, as you say 50km/h without breaking a sweat. And they are quite rigid as well so very stable at those sort of speeds.
