Re: My first car... advice before I buy it (or not!)

Hey Sapin, just wanted to say good luck with the search. I know car-hunting is stressful, particularly when you don't have one to go look at other options, and the public transport (plus childcare) gets expensive fast, especially on a limited income. Keep your head high and let the insults roll off you - you are doing your best!

Cost of public transport can be capped by a GA.
Cost of a car is principally uncapped.
The notion that a car is somehow cheaper than public transport is really misleading.
That's really a best-case scenario:
- if you already own a car
- if you don't drive too much
- if nothing breaks, no repairs, no accidents
- if you have cheap insurance

It's not that I think a car will be cheaper than public transport, but I'll have far more freedom. I've put off having a car for years as I thought I didn't really need it, I've spent my life travelling around by public transport.

Now it's the time I need a car, I'm sure my circumstances are similar to others' in a remote location - Sure we have trains once an hour, and although this might seem quite reasonable, and sure it's doable, I find I waste a lot of my day waiting for train connections. For example, one day I finish work at 13h30 (I can't change these hours), the train to get home leaves the station at 13h36, so I automatically, have to catch the 14h36... then an hour to get back. For a meeting at 09h00 in the next city, (15 minutes by car) I have to leave at 07h30 (as the 08h30 only gets me to the station at 09h00)...

So it's not really the cost, but I think I could also enjoy my week a lot more and have a lot more free time for myself and with my family

Re: My first car... advice before I buy it (or not!)

Just to update - I've had my car for a month now.
It's has abs, airbags, no rust, 100k on the clock, just had a big service and a fresh mfk for less than 2k. It doesn't go very fast, which is good for insurance but it's fine for me and I'm very happy!
