I have had the problem that the STVA would not test a Swiss car that was not insured. They wanted me to buy day plates before they would test it. A different STVA were fine with a motorcycle without plates but that was 15 years ago now.

Recently I had to register car brought from Poland. There was no problem getting the insurance notification (Versicherungnachweis), and StVA even wrote me in the letter that with this pre-insurance confirmation I can drive to MfK with no plates.

I'm not selling anything. The problem is that a not every headlight is the same.

Short version is that there are often metal "flaps" that cut off the beam to the left or right. You need to disassemble the headlight, remove and replace those flaps. Sometimes you can turn them around, other times they need modification. Sometimes esp. with Halogen lamps you need to change the reflector...

The cheapest pair of complete Bi-Xenon LHD headlamps for this XJ, that I could find was 1600! In the end I did it myself just took me an afternoon. Cost nothing in the end except my time.

But this thread is "how to import a car" not "how to fix your headlights".....

Hey guys. Interested to hear experiences on this. For a U.K. car, In place of changing headlights is it possible to pass the test with beam deflectors? And also a stick-on km conversation on the speedometer? Will this pass the technical inspection?

Ask the inspection centre directly in Basel.

I doubt stickers will be accepted, the reasoning will be ...."they may become unstuck"

Don't know about stick-on speed conversion, but my '85 Guzzi LeMans, that I imported in '86, has MPH in large, and kph in small, and is no problem.

And they don't care that the odometer is in miles.

Don't forget to search for LHD used parts ed headlights in the UK, maybe by part number. No one wants them there, unlike LHD lights here which fetch top money. I got a cheap KPH Speedo for a 916 Ducati in the UK from someone that had imported a bike from Europe.

Or more simply, because they are not mentioned in the VTS, any modification of the headlight is forbidden, and your headlight unit is still not apporved for right-hand traffic.
