Emissions Testing Sticker Not Compulsory

Just in case anyone didn't know (i didn't till today)...

The sticker which shows the due date for your next Emissions Test (Abgaswartung) is not compulsory, you don't have to put one on your car.

I realised that my XJR didn't have the sticker, so I asked my mechanic who'd actually done the exhaust test & taken the car in for the MFK, and he told me it's not compulsory "nicht obligatorisch" to have the sticker, you only need to keep the paper in the car.

He told me that a lot of his clients don't want to put the sticker on thier cars, and in fact the Police at Zürich Airport are known to check cars in the carpark and issue fines if the sticker is out of date.

They can't issue the fine if there is no sticker. Obviously you need to keep the testing up to date...but that ugly sticker can go!

And Switzerland is considering ditching the whole mandatory testing thing for all OBD equipped vehicles altogether. In a remarkable case of administrative pragmatism, they have realized that defects are almost non-existent, and self-diagnosed by the car's ECU anyway.

ok, stupid question, but how do you actually read that sticker for a expiry date?
(ready to be ridiculed for asking such a dumb and obvious question...)

who cares, it's all now down to being caught with your engine management light on now, right? There is no more testing and no more paperwork. Correct?

Assuming your car is not very old (about 2000 or newer) & has at least B03 or higher written in the car papers under emissions
