Zurich - München by Car

Hi,

does anyone have an idea about the fastest way by car from Zurich to Munchen?
I understand how my navigation system works but I am curious if someone has a better idea.

The only thing I would say is don't forget to buy the 2 Euro "corridor Vignette" if you intend to take the Pfänder Tunnel round Lindau/Bregenz. If you do not it could potentially cost you considerably more....

And try not to speed...There are some sneaky cameras when you pass through the tunnels in Austria

Re: Zurich - München by Car

I've tried every possible way, albeit starting from Schaffhausen.

via Stockach, Friedrichshafen, Ravensburg (traffic!)
via Stockach, back roads to Memmingen (awful)
via Stuttgart (on a friends recommendation, never again)
via Bregenz, Lindau, Wangen (traffic!)

Every route sucks....

It's OK once you get to Memmingen, but every road from CH to there is a PITA...

If I had to start from Zürich then via Bregenz...or take the train...

Re: Zurich - München by Car

It's a pity the OP wants the fastest way. There is also a very nice drive through the Bregenzerwald and the Allgäu, but it takes a bit longer. The scenery is super though.

Re: Zurich - München by Car

8 out of 10 drives i made it without a jam in 3.5h and i went through pfändertunnel, not driving through dornbirn and bregenz.
the shittiest bit is always the ride from central zurich up to/past winterthur so that i opted a couple of times the route via sargans and then towards st.gallen. and i posted my ride on mitfahrgelegenheit.de to get on some nice chicks, have a chat/flirt and safe some moneytoes.

Is the Pfändertunnel still single lane due to roadworks? If not it could be fine. If it is then you have to avoid peak times and holiday traffic like the plague. Last year I was stuck in traffic on the way there for over 90 minutes. ON the way back I was too clever by half and tried to drive through Lindau/Bregenz....that was even worse.

Re: Zurich - München by Car

Go towards St Gallen, from there you will cross into Austria for a fewkilometers and then into Germany. It is all autobahn and the border controlFrom Ch to A is relaxed. Once you are in Germany the autobahn has no speedrestrictions all the way to munched. It is fast and low traffic. If you go Fridayevening you will have traffic no matter which way you go so you can throw thebook out the window and just go with the flow. Friday evening you can take anyroute because they are all equal

I know they are always chomping on something in Munich (Bretzel, Weisswurst, gebrannte Mandeln, etc), but I didn't know they had changed the name to reflect that!

Yes - single lane in the new tunnel which seems to make the traffic worse than single lane in the old tunnel. God knows when it will be finished.

FYI, did Winterthur to Nürnberg last Friday evening and would say we had ~a 20-30 minutes on top of a smooth journey due to both the CH/Austria border junction (always bad) and the pfändertunnel. Traffic moving, but very slow in both areas. But then again, it was similar on a Saturday morning the time before that.

Also tried via Schaffhausen, Stockach to Memmingen in the past and and although less queues, it feels slow and is more tiring without saving any time over Bregenz.

Having tried both routes about 10 times in the last 6 months, I would take the St Gallen-Bregenz route everytime.

Re: Zurich - München by Car

I did this commute for over a year, almost every weekend and the only way to go is Bregenz, then the A96 via Memmingen to Munich. The worst part, aside from the tunnel, is the part between Memmingen and Munich where there is lots of traffic and 120 zones.

The only issue you need to consider is whether to drive via St. Gallen and the A1 or Sargans and the A13. If I you live on the wrong side of the lake and it's afternoon commute time, definitely drive via Sargans as there will always be less traffic there than trying to get through town, the Zurich tunnels, etc.

Re: Zurich - München by Car

We always drove the main route, that is Zürich - St. Gallen - Dornbirn - Pfändertunnel - Memmingen - Munich.
Up to now every other route was an epic fail.

One could be very smart with the timing: whenever possible, drive out of peak hours, days.
We try to leave earlier or later when there is a 3-4 days long weekend, right after or before school breaks.

Since Juli 4. 2013 both tubes of the Pfändertunnel are open and in use.
Also since then the so called Korridorvignette does no longer exists. You will need the normal Austrian vignette. Available as 10 days, 2 months, calendar year.
http://www.asfinag.at/maut/vignette

Apart from that. Still the fastest route.
