London City Airport-Geneva

After my monthly drives, now the weather has changed we are flying over next week. I must admit that it is the first time I have flown since having heart op so am terrified. We have opted to go from London City instead of Gatwick or Heathrow. The check in times seem to be a lot less. has anybody flown this route? Is it easier than Gatwick or Heathrow? I would be interested to hear of any experience that a EF member has had

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

city is a great airport with good connections, depending where you are coming from or going to in england of course.

most airlines now offer online check in which can save you even more time.... you can print out your boarding pass before you even go to the airport.

good luck!

I used to do ZRH-LCY quite regularly. Its is brilliant. London City is a tiny airport. No queues, easy check-in . Plane parks right at terminal. Get the 20min DLR to connect to the London tube station at Bank or whereever. Easy-peasy. far better than Heathrow. You can probably save 45 mins of hassle each visit by going City airport.

Only flown City to ZH but it is a great airport. Gatwick is miles away and Heathrow is just too big.

Only fly City these days ... Heathrow is a waste of time & I hate flying back out of Gatwick.

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

Well, thanks a lot, it certainly seems to be a good option and much easier than the other airports. Just have to make sure I find the bar and have a stiff drink beforehand to settle the old nerves.......

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

City Airport is OK if you are on that side of town, if you have to go West then it's a hell of a treck. Anyone coming by car to meet you has London congestion charges to contend with, and if you decide to use the tube then count on at least an hour and several changes of lines to get across London (No fun if you're lugging a case around)

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

I've only flown into City the last few times because it's so convenient with the DLR, which takes me to Bank, only one tube stop away from our office there.

I also just really like the small feel of City airport. The check-in and gates are literally just a few paces away from the DLR. Swiss and BA both have web check-in, so you don't have to be there particularly early. And the waiting area is brilliant - small, comfortable, pub nearby, huge windowed area to watch the planes landing and taking off. Flying into and out of City was the most relaxing flying experience I've had since back in the days when I was growing up in the Midwest, and we had to take little 18-seaters from a tiny regional airport across Lake Michigan over to Chicago.

Hi Smackerjack,

Who are you flying with? Swiss or CityJet?

(Or someone else that I haven't heard of?)

Personally, I preferred Swiss. The CityJet (Air France) plane was a bit old and certainly quite 'tired' inside the cabin. But it doesn't really matter. Its a short journey and it'll be over before you know it!

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

city airport is the best!

i only flew city-basel for 2 years when i was regularly visiting my boyfriend here.

it's easy to get to, there almost are no queues (even after the terrorist threats the queues were moving really fast) and you only need to be there less than an hour before your flight as it takes you about 10 minutes from check in to gate!

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

Flown recently from Geneva its a good Airport, less hassles with Security/customs and large crowds. Flown Leeds to Geneva.

Getting there by train from Zürich is 2 hours 50 minutes, so I went to sleep at Mövenpick Hotel, very near to Airport.

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

When we flew to Switzerland to being our adventures, we went London City to Zurich with BA. As most people have pointed out, it is a lovely little airport with friendly non stressed staff. The size is perfect to navigate and transport conncetions are good too. We would definitely use it again if we were flying to visit my parents (London), sadly in-laws live in Manchester so that's the one we will use to see them

Re: London City Airport-Geneva

I fly Basel to London City all the time. City airport is one of my favourites- you can be in the car home 5 minutes after stepping of the plane. Way more convenient for London. Also cheaper and quicker (DLR, 3 quid) to get into the centre or to your next station etc than the other London Airports. And unlike Heathrow there's no circling around above the airport waiting to land, and no taxiing for 30 minutes to get to the gate. I reckon it's also cheaper 90 % of the time on Swiss than on Easyjet, especially once you take into account the ripoff train connections into London.
