Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

Actually I wanted to go to Munich and was wondering if I could save some money by combining Gemeinde Tageskarte with another ticket.

I would first reach St. Margrethen using Gemeinde Tageskarte.

For journey between St. Margrethen and Munich, I will buy a separate ticket

Can I do this ?

Thanks for your help

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

I think (I am not sure, you would have to check with SBB or Deutsche Bahn) that you can do that but ONLY if the train stops in St. Margrethen. At least that is the rule with the Anschlussticket.

Hope that helps!

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

Actually St. Margrethen is one of the intermediate stops if I take the fastest connection from Zurich

Zurich HB
Zürich Flughafen
Winterthur
St. Gallen
St. Margrethen
Bregenz
Lindau Hbf
Memmingen
Buchloe
München Hbf

So I guess it shouldn't be a problem!

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

I have done that using the GA ( a Tageskarte is basically a one day GA ).

GA to St. Margarethen, then a low cost connection ticket to Lindau ( DE ) via Bregenz ( AT ) that costs CHF7 one way from SBB, and then a regional ticket to Munich ( Länder Ticket - no ICE trains )** OR

Deutsche Bahn Europa-Spezial Schweiz from just about any major station in CH to Munich.

** Halbtax Card / BahnCard 25 with Railplus gives you these rates

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

@jrspet
Thanks for such great information.

Do I need to do prior booking or reservation of the tickets between St. Margarethen/Lindau and Lander Ticket (Bavaria) or can I buy them on the spot ?

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

It really depends on the kind of journey you have in mind.

If the journey involves a fast single train ride ( normally a EuroCity class train ) from eg St. M or Zürich to Münich, the cross border is already included ( via SBB Ticketshop online or Deutsche Bahn online ).

If the journey is slightly slower paced and thus split into 3 portions ( CH to St. M, St. M to Lindau and then Lindau to Münich ), AND if the dates are known in advance, I would get the cross border ticket good for any ONE date within 30 days of issue from SBB Ticket Shop online ( alternative is Deutsche Bahn online print at home ), stop at Lindau Hbf and buy the Länder ticket at the DB automated machine in Lindau Hbf. The Länder ticket can also be bought online at Deutsche Bahn.

Use the Tageskarte up to St. M ( assuming on the EuroCity ), after St. M show the cross border ticket, valid till Lindau. Get off at Lindau and take the regional train(s) to Münich, whichever route you prefer using the Länder ticket.

The problem with Länder tickets is that they are good for one day and if coming back on another day ( 2nd Länder ticket required or a Europa-Spezial Schweiz to CH / St. M and ... another Tageskarte to your home ), the Europa-Spezial Schweiz as two separate one way tickets might be cheaper. Länder tickets are great for groups whilst in Germany.

All Europa-Spezial tickets are Zugbindung ie tied in to a specific train, date and time no changes possible.

Enclosed file shows CHF18 for a return cross border ticket, open date. Cheaper if you specified Halbtax, BC25, Railplus etc. ( CHF14 actually ).

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

I know the dates when I need to travel. Going on 18th and coming back on 20th.

I think I will buy online print at home ticket between St. M / Lindau and also Länder ticket so that I dont have to get down and change trains. Also Lander ticket will be useful because I plan to travel one or two places with some friends in Munich.

CH to St. M - Gemeinade Tageskarte
St. M to Lindau Hbf - Cross-border ticket bought online
Lindau Hbf to Munich - Länder ticket bought online

For return I will probably by Europa Speciale Schweiz.

Thanks for the help

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

Europa-Spezial-Schweiz cheapest 92 days in advance, costs increasing daily so book now!

Schaffhausen is cheaper as an option if available to you.

Edit: Just saw Bern .. limits the choices as Münich is generally not available from Bern.

Re: Combining Gemeinde - Tageskarte with Germany tickets

And just in case, this is the delivered version of the ticket - return cross border, for one trip to and one trip return to be performed within a month from a certain date.

I chose SBB as delivery of the ticket was free ( DB charges EUR 3.50 for postage although their tickets for the same rtn journey are cheaper using EUR). This price is slightly discounted because of the discounting card eg CH Halbtax or GA, DE BC25 or AT Vorteil.

I chose the delivered ticket method as it gives me a flexibility of dates within a 30 day window since print at home tickets are valid only for a certain date.

Enjoy your trip!
