no Student GA card for Phd?

Hey guys,

THis morning I went to train station for a GA since I need to travel between zurich and lausanne and I am a PhD student.
Last year when I arrived I thought that PhD students can buy a GA card with 2400CHF but the man today I met said "NO".

I have all my ID card, student card, Half fare card on me, but he just told me know= =

Does anyone know something about this?

Thanks!

GA travelcard, 1st or 2nd class, for students aged 25 to 30* and registered at a Swiss university or college.
The GA travelcard for students is available to all students registered at a Swiss University, University of Applied Sciences or Technical College as defined by the Swiss Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology (BBT/OPET). For a detailed overview of these schools please refer to the lists below.

In order to obtain your GA travelcard for students you will need your student ID or, if you are studying at a University of Applied Sciences or Technical College ("Fachhochschule", "Höhere Fachschule"), your enrolment certificate. The enrolment certificate (University of Applied Sciences or Technical College only) can be obtained from the secretariat of the relevant department at the institution at which you are studying.

Check with your Uni if they have a special discount programme with SBB.

Re: no Student GA card for Phd?

Perhaps an indelicate question, but how old are you?

The SBB website indicates that Student GA cards are only for the under 30s.

Second question: Where are you studying? This page has a list of all the institutions where students can apply for a student GA.

Re: no Student GA card for Phd?

I am 27. and I checked the regulations announced by ETH, I am sure now I can have a GA with 2400CHF. Maybe I should go to train station again and find another person.

Re: no Student GA card for Phd?

See the CFF/SBB website, yes it exists.

http://www.cff.ch/abonnements-et-bil...ticuliers.html

However, it does have certain age restrictions and lists of universities for qualification. Not sure if post-grad, ie. Phd though qualifies or not. Look through the list at the bottom on qualifying schools/programmes.

Re: no Student GA card for Phd?

for ETH PhD students and staff, it's a 15% discount, which means a 2nd class GA is about 2850 CHF. In order to obtain it, you have to get a voucher from the University.

I suggest you contact the proper people in your institution and ask them.

I disagree with the price, but this process is correct. You need to get a voucher from ETH which you then give to the SBB - without this the discount is impossible. If I recall I also paid 2400, not 2850.

Re: no Student GA card for Phd?

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much! I followed your tips and already get my GA now.
The final price is 15% discount based on 2400CHF, so I paid for less than 2100CHF.

Thank you so much!!!!
